Doctors have so many different versions of the pre-op diet that they give out, not to mention the amount of time they require you to be on the pre-op diet. You would be surprised at the many variations -- but then all patients aren't the same. Some patients need to lose a lot of weight pre-op; others don't. Some patients have fatty livers, even liver disease; others don't.

The major purpose of the pre-op diet is to shrink your liver pre-op and make it much less "slick," so that your surgeon can manipulate your liver (which is cuddled up next to your stomach) without nicking or tearing it. You do NOT want your liver getting injured at all. That is VERY NOT GOOD.

The post-op complications from a damaged liver can be life-threatening, not to mention a major, major drag.

Find out what your surgeon requires and please follow that plan.
