Default Questions ...9 days post op

Hey all I have some questions I would appreciate some answers /advice to

1 when they say no drinking while you eat ...I am in the stage of cream soups, broth etc...that is not considered the same as eating right? you can eat cream of whatever and drink?

    2. what kind of calories should we be shooting for?

    3. I have read that we should only be able to hold about a 1/4 cup of soup or whatever....I did stop at a 1/4 cup but I did not feel full...I was still feeling hungry.....I tried half a cup of vanilla sf pudding...I could have easily eaten the whole thing....I don't really feel much restriction until I try to drink fast....

    4. It says to drink 64 oz of water a day....does that include your shakes? or on top of? Also crystal light in your water be added to that water total or does it have to be straight water...I do drink it...but I just don't enjoy straight water that much...\

anyone else just feel hungry all of the time? I am worried I will eat too much because I don't feel the restriction that much so I have not been eating hardly anything...trying to get myself on some kind of track...thanks
    Please help me out anyone?

Your surgeon's guidelines may be different - there's a lot of variety, but here's how it went for me:

    1. At your stage, the eating/drinking requirement isn't applicable.....everything is a liquid.

    2. In this stage, I was at 300-500 calories a day. It's really not so much of an issue as long as you're sticking to your approved liquids list.

    3. You may not feel a lot of restriction until you start on more solid foods - eggs, yogurts, etc. The denser the food, the more restriction you should feel.

    4. My doc (and many other docs out there I think) count shakes towards your liquids. Other things at this stage like jello (if you're allowed to eat it) and broth do too.

No offense, but, I'm going to disagree with most of what you typed here.

    1. The eating and drinking guidelines are just that. Guidelines. Personally, I found that not drinking 30 minutes before, during eating and 30 minutes after eating served me well. You don't have a lot of room and water takes up a lot of room. Having said that, drinking water is the single most important thing you can do at this stage...in my opinion. It will definitely help mitigate the stall you are about to experience.

    2. Quit counting calories. The first line in my mantra is, "You are not on a diet." I go on to say that since you are not on a diet, you can't be failing at a diet. Counting calories is dieting. Plain and simple. Here's my advice. Try to eat what ever you can and pay attention to protein, carbs, and fat. You need as much of all of those as you can stuff into your pinkie sized sleeve. This will also help mitigate the stall you are about to get.

    3. I'm not sure if I agree with this or disagree. I'll just let you figure that one out for yourself. I really do think this is a unique thing for each of us.

    4. I couldn't disagree with this more. You can drink what ever you want, when ever you want and as much of it as you want, as long as you still drink no less that 64 oz of WATER a day. Crystal Lite and zero calorie Mio are ok to add. Tea, coffee, sodas, sports drinks, shakes, cocktails, beer, wine, etc. are ok to drink when you want them, just don't count them. Here is an undeniable truth. The primary undiagnosed cause of stalls in sleevers is chronic dehydration. Dehydration will shut your metabolism down just as quickly as a lack of carbs and fat. Stay hydrated. You won't be able to drink 64 oz of anything at this stage. So, make sure the bulk of what you drink is water.

Overall, I got sleeved to break down barriers. Not build them. Regimented food plans and rules suck. Find a workable plan for YOU and then adhere to that. I have found out the hard way that most surgeons, and NUTs, are invested in their process and not in finding an individual plan that will work for you.

I'm saying that if you can drink them, and you want one, then you should. Just don't count it toward the 80/64. Who the heck says that soda is forbidden anyway?

Now, for clarification. I don't drink them, or anything carbonated because it tears my sleeve up. But, if I could, and I wanted one, then I would.

Again..if you aren't drinking sodas because of some caloric or dietary restriction, then you are on a diet. Diets suck. We all suck at diets. Diets didn't work for us pre op and they won't work for us post op.

It's been awhile since I posted my Mantra. Here it is.

You are not on a diet

Since you are not on a diet, you cannot be failing at a diet.

This is not a race. It's a marathon. You will be sleeved for as long as you breathe fresh air. So, take the time to figure out how to be happy as a sleever in a non sleeved world.

You must eat no less than 80 grams of protein a day...once you are able to eat that much.

You must drink no less than 64 oz of WATER a day, once you are able. Not soda, tea, cocktails, sports drinks, wine, etc. WATER, AGUA, H2O.

And last but not least....you must never ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever over eat......ever.

    Thus endeth the mantra.

Tinman, I agree with everything you said, but at 9 days post-op, isn't it a bit of a different game? Things like separating eating and drinking when all you're getting in are liquids seems moot - no matter what your philosophy. And when you were 9 days post-op and on liquids/cream soups only, were you able to get in 64 oz of plain water, plus, protein shakes and broth? I thought that's why, at that early stage, most docs will tell you that all your liquids counts (?)

I'm 100% with you on "find your own plan - find what works for you," but in the early 1-2 week stage of the game, how much leeway do you have? Not challenging you here - I really am curious on your take on things.

I appreciate what you are saying, but, the advice I give is just that, advice. I can tell you that projax is about to stall. I know from a ton of experience that there isn't much projax can do to avoid that stall. However, I do know that projax can do something about how long they stall for. Hydration.

Just because a surgeon or NUT thinks that all liquids count toward hydration doesn't mean it's true. It also doesn't mean I'm right either. Personally, at 9 days post op, I could only drink...I couldn't stomach anything else. So, I drank water. When I stalled, I only stalled for three days. Without knowing it, I had stumbled on a way to bust stalls. It took me almost a year to apply that knowledge in a meaningful way. Part of my combative ways concerning liquids is also rooted in the idea that the shakes are actually good for you and help. I, for one, do not believe that. Again, just my personal opinion. Do some research on protein isolates and their malabsorption due to the amino acid reduction during the isolate process.

Pretty eye opening. There are a few on here who would vehemently disagree with me. I say to them, "ok". What works for them is exactly what they should be doing.

But, what I'm trying to get across is that there isn't a hard and fast rule concerning liquids. However, another poster on here claims that sodas are forbidden....that's the mentality I'm trying to fix. Each of us needs to find the right combination of the four pillars that works for us. Even at day nine, it's not too early to begin to plan.

edit to add........and please, by all means, challenge me if you think I'm full of crap. I am never above admitting I'm wrong if I am. Alternate points of view are exactly what this board needs and it's what I preach. Find your own way...not the NUTs or surgeons. That means that there needs to be a multitude of viewpoints in order for folks to draw their on conclusions. So, please, bring it.

I've wondered many of the exact same questions as you. We shall figure it out yesterday I did good. Premier protein shake split between breakfast and snack. Lunch: cream of tomatoe soup unjury added dinner: 3/4 protein shake and sipped on crystal light and other fluids all day. Today I didn't do so good. I wasn't thirsty or hungry. I had a lot of acid today, but hopefully tomorrow I will do better!!! How are u doing on your protein shakes?
