    Default Pureed food

    Hello!
I'm 8 days post op and feel ok....I had my check up with the surgeon and the diatician with some conflicting info. After meeting with the diatician who told me to follow very strictly what "the book" says as far as diet and even if the SURGEON said I could puree food that she would't recommend doing this!!! I have been very light headed and dizzy, along with my eyesight being a bit off. The surgeon feels this is because I am healing so quickly that I need more than the liquid diet and could benefit from some pureed food. What are your thoughts on this? My surgeon is the new kid in the practice and has had more current training than the older docs in the practice. I feel the staff is bucking what he says because they are set in their ways with the old docs. So being confused on top of not feeling so great makes for a crabby sleeve patient!! Sorry for any misspelling....I'm tired! LOL

I’m 2 weeks out yesterday. My plan is:
    Week 1- liquid w protein 3x daily
Week 2- full liquid, adds yogurt, ricotta cheese, low sugar applesauce etc.
    Week 3 & 4- puréed foods
I’ve seen other plans here and mine seems strict in comparison, but keep in mind, our stomachs are “new”. If the nutritional list thinks it’s too early for puréed foods what about yogurt, cottage cheese those type of foods? Maybe they could help.

I am allowed cottage cheese, the sweet food like yogurt I can't keep down because they are way too sweet. I have had to switch to protein powder because the shakes don't stay down or in!! I'm hoping for a better second week! Thank you so much for the suggestions

I haven't had the surgery yet, but my nutritionist has told me that I will be on liquid diet for three weeks post op. (protein drinks). From the sound of it, every doc has a different rules and guidelines.

I like your docs plan better. Three weeks of liquid diet is very hard to follow, in my opinion.

Regarding the protein shakes, I was told absolutely no pre-made shakes. They need to be powder so I can achieve the full amount of protein ( 20 grams at least) in only 4-6 ounces of liquid. Also it must be whey isolate for best absorption. Mixed with low sugar almond milk, they’re great. Your issue with the protein could be the sweetener used.
Edit: I use low sugar Greek yogurt, maybe that would help.

It’s amazing, I’ve seen so many different plans here. One of the things I do like about mine is that I’m changing it up every couple of weeks. But I still maintain the 3 shakes daily until the final phase which begins 2 months out with a regular low fat weight loss diet. They recommend at that point using protein shakes as a snack to ensure enough protein daily.

My nutritionist and surgeon disagreed all the time (and then the nurse often told me something different!) It's all crazy-making.

My surgeon is young but very accomplished and bariatric surgery protocols have changed quite a bit in the last couple years so I take her advice over the "old" nutritionist. If your surgeon thinks you're healing quickly, that's great. S/he doesn't want to screw up the surgery by telling you to do something you shouldn't. I started on purees at about 10 days without any problem. Kept them very liquid at first and made sure there weren't chunks. I tolerated some foods better than others and made sure I noted what worked and what didn't. I started by blending chicken noodle soup and adding a bit more chicken for protein. It was basically a thick liquid. Not sure how that could hurt you. Just keep your purees well blended and more liquid and see how it goes.

Yes, get used to sorting thru lots of conflicting opinions....

That is great! I'm going to have to talk to my nutritionist next week and tell her about this and see what she thinks. Thank you!

I was supposed to do liquids for 2 weeks. I started on soft/pureed foods at 10 days because I could not stand it. I had no issues. As long as you are not overeating you will be fine if you start on soft foods. Just make sure you are eating healthy foods. One thing that my surgeon said that was always the key to the way I did things was "listen to your body"!! Your body may need things that someone else's doesn't. I say you will be fine. The biggest thing is to make sure you are getting enough protein and fluids in. Make good choices.

HI All doctors are different, i was on liquid only for 4 weeks post op, which included protein shakes. The doctor and dietitian agreed and the liquid was, if you can suck it up a straw its ok, although you can't use a straw. I am now on puree food for 3 weeks and them move onto mashed food and then introduce proper food. I have a strict doctor. However I see the dietitian this week and will ask if I can move onto mashed food, as I cannot take much more of the pureed food. I look at it and don't want it. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

My thoughts - are you getting in your minimum protein and liquid requirements in? I know I was on basically only protein shakes for the first 2 weeks. I felt good. If you want to start mushy food be sure it's primarily protein.

RE: the eyesight change - I experienced this in the days immediately after surgery, it was more than a little bit scary. I was suddenly having a lot of trouble even reading my cell phone to text people back or to read the paperwork the hospital was giving me. I asked the nursing staff and they sounded surprised "Huh, I wonder if it's one of the medicines we are giving you".

It ended up being the anti-nausea medicine they gave me - Scopalamine. It was through a transdermal patch behind my ear. As soon as I removed it, washed the area off, and waited a day - my vision went back to normal. Found out its a common side affect once i was able to research it on the internet.

Just thought I'd mention this in case you are on a new medicine that could be affecting your vision.

On the pureed foods - I had a pretty conservative (read overly cautious) food progression schedule compared to some on here, so I didn't hesitate to try to move a couple days early into the next stage. BUT I would only try a tiny little bit and then wait, to see how my stomach handled it. The full liquid stage never satisfied me, but once I was on pureed - then I could feel that restriction kick in and knew this surgery was going to work!

    have a great day!
