After Sleeve Spa Day in Tijuana
I have my sleeve surgery on May 1 in Tijuana and after the hospital we are staying at the Real Inn until May 6th. I wanted to go whale watching and my husband is not interested so I was thinking that maybe we could go to a spa and get massages. Does anyone know why I wouldn't be able to get a massage?
Re: After Sleeve Spa Day in Tijuana
You will have just had major surgery. I think you'll be more interested in sleeping and recovering than vacationing, but that's just what I did the first week after surgery. And sipping every waking moment. And walking a little.
As far as a massage, as long as they don't touch your incisions you'd probably be fine, though lying flat on your stomach may be painful.
Re: After Sleeve Spa Day in Tijuana
Seriously?
You were considering whale watching after a major surgery?
Re: After Sleeve Spa Day in Tijuana
I am thinking that going to a spa will be the LAST thing on your mind.
Re: After Sleeve Spa Day in Tijuana
Made me laugh, Kenson and DutchSleeve! My thoughts exactly. I literally slept that whole first week.
Re: After Sleeve Spa Day in Tijuana
I was at Medium Care for 5 days, vomiting blood... that can happen too.
But I really thought I heard a lot of things, in all the time I am on boards like this.
But this is a complete new one.
Actually, I am flabbergasted...

Please don't take our comments the wrong way Kona Girl. We are just trying to tell you this will not be a vacation. You will need to rest a whole lot, especially since you have to fly all the way home to Hawaii. That's one long trip after major surgery. Best of luck to you.
Re: After Sleeve Spa Day in Tijuana
No, I am not in any way trying to be mean.
Just concerned.
This is no walk in the park.
It may not look like it, but is ís major surgery.
Actually, I am surprised they give you permission to fly for such a long time.
You will be on blood thinners for a couple of weeks, I hope?
Please be careful.
Re: After Sleeve Spa Day in Tijuana
The last thing I felt like doing was .....well, actually anything! I just wanted to sleep and when I wasn't sleeping I was sipping water or slowly going for small walks.
Don't underestimate how you will be feeling after surgery. It is major!
However, a couple of weeks afterwards you will be feeling like your old "new" self again. Perhaps think about booking a spa retreat for you and your husband a couple of months out? I think you both would probably appreciate it more then.
Re: After Sleeve Spa Day in Tijuana
I think we all know why you wouldn't and shouldn't go to get a massage or watch whales. You will be prone to infection so you won't want to lay on a massage table and it will hurt like heck to put your weight on a fresh incision and whale watching from a boat....can't imagine...
We are not trying to be mean spirited but you asked a question and personally I had to read over it a couple of times to make sure it was "real" because I can't imagine that someone could ask those questions if they took any type of pre-education classes or did research on the surgical outcomes, criteria for healing, etc. I personally think you might want to become more informed about what to expect post-surgery. Good luck!
Re: After Sleeve Spa Day in Tijuana
I’m sorry but agree with all the ladies on here. You shouldn’t go try and have a spa day. You can’t lay on your stomach. You need to just focus on getting well. Especially with a long trip you’ll have to come on. I’m sorry but I just about died when I saw you wanted to go whale watch after major surgery. I strongly encourage you to read CDC’s stern warning about traveling to Mexico for surgery. There is a superbug effecting Tijuana Mexico surgery patients. Hope everything goes well
Re: After Sleeve Spa Day in Tijuana
I am not one for sugar coating things and you all say it so well, sweet and so genuine.
I couldn't believe this either, until I read your other posts, especially the one where you said you felt you did your research and homework very good.
That really scared the heck out of me.
We all share our experience and knowledge here from the "been there, done that" point of view.
And it would be of no help to you, if we said otherwise.
I think it is a very good idea to stay for one week more, in the first place you will have time to recover and rest and sip, sip, sip and take little walks, but (for me the most important) you will be near the hospital or clinic in case of any emergency.
It was NOT my intention to offend you by any means.
I just say things the way I see them.
Take all this advice to heart, please.
I wish you all the best!
Re: After Sleeve Spa Day in Tijuana
Well, I'm glad I provided comic relief for y'all! :) I have researched everything about the surgery and I have seen a wide spectrum of initial recovery so I was planning on doing nothing but sleeping for 3 full days and then hopefully getting out and doing something on the 4th day. If i'm not able to, then I won't. No biggie. But, dang - a facial and a massage for $45, how could anyone resist the allure of that??!! Thanks for your answers to my question-I (and my husband) will definitely put my recovery effort first before anything).

Please be sure to get up and walk a lot on that plane flight home. That's too long to sit! Best of luck to you.
Re: After Sleeve Spa Day in Tijuana
Hello Yvonne!
I would add, make sure you wear your compression stockings for the flight, and get your heparin shots!
My sleeve was 3 years ago, and like Simonne, I was vomiting non stop for three days, with an IV for the fluids during those three days, and I was miserable. I do think we are exceptions, because many people are fine post-op.
I just had an other coelioscopy surgery on March 1st, also done indeed with those gas to inflate the tummy. I various pains for like a week (but didn't take a pain killer after day 3), and had to wear my compression stockings for two weeks. I had pains in my shoulders (because of the gas) for more than 6 days and I could tell you that even without the vomiting (this time) I would have never allow anyone to give me a massage. I was too uncomfortable (and grumpy from not sleeping) for that. And full of bruises..
best wishes for your surgery! take care!
