Bowel Movements Question.
Hey Guys,
I am 4 days post op and I havent had a bowel movement in 1 week (after 1 day into my clear liquid diet). Is this normal? I havent been concerned about it because I have been on clear liquids, however I am having some pain in my stomach and lower abdomen.
Any advice or your experiences will be highly appreciated!
Re: Bowel Movements Question.
My doc said if i didn't poo after 4 days to take the milk of magnesia... I did... and it worked :D
if you get too impacted you'll be sorry. take something now.
Re: Bowel Movements Question.
Once I started the full liquids I had no problem going; however, that totally changed once I went to soft and pureed foods. The constipation was really bad for the first 2 months. I did take stool softeners but no laxatives. I know that my water intake plays a major role and have tried to increase my fluid intake. I am now 4 months out and am having no problems, thank goodness. I also think it has to do with me being able to have more veggies as well. Water intake was the key for me! Hope this helps!
Re: Bowel Movements Question.
I have to take dulcolax every other week..Otherwise i can go a month with no BM..I was the same before my surgery and had a colonoscopy that was normal....My dr recommended MiraLax, Benefiber, etc...
Good luck!!!
Re: Bowel Movements Question.
Thanks everyone, that's very helpful!
Re: Bowel Movements Question.
LOL.. yep, i was at 5 days post op. called the doc and he suggested milk of magnesia - ooh boy did that work :)
Remember you really are not eating anything to generate a poop.. Everynow and then I will chew a fiber tablet..
Re: Bowel Movements Question.
Miralax was my doc recommendation and it works for me! I drink it the least amount of liquid and within the day I go! Not gross just normal movement! I'm 7 wis out!
Re: Bowel Movements Question.
i once went 3 weeks without a movement. I now take Dulcolax stool softeners. I swear by them. I once, not too long ago, got very backed up and tried to just push through it and ended up with a hemeroid. Wow, I was in pain. So now, every night I take one Dulcolax (not laxative, but stool softener) with a cup of warm herbal tea. I got about every other day or so now.
Re: Bowel Movements Question.
I've had the exact opposite problem, post op day 3 I began diarrhea and was on imodium for almost 2 days before it stopped. This was in conjunction with adding crushed Fibre One cereal original to my mushed up foods. It stopped and I thought I was good, but it started again today. Now back to the imodium and crushed fibre one cereal. Everyone's system is different and I would imagine we have to get used to what our bodies are doing. As the Dr. put it to me our insides were messed with and it's going to take some time to get back on track.
Re: Bowel Movements Question.
I had diarrhea in the beginning and was ok with that but then I became VERY constipated. In over a 3 1/2 week time I had to give myself 2 anemias. Not fun! I took everything and nothing worked. I'm still taking softners everyday and I feel like it's starting again. Take care of it right away back up will make you feel physically sick.
Re: Bowel Movements Question.
Thanks for your replies everyone. Ive been travelling home and am now almost 1 week out. I still havent passed a movement so I am off to get some stool softeners tomorrow. Also looking forward to full liquids and hoping I can get a bit more nutrition with Protein Shakes that may keep things a bit more regular!
