Does everyone have to have a endoscopy? It was never mentioned to me
I didn't have one. Dr. did it during surgery.
What I've learned on here is everyone and every surgeon is different.
I did and they did it during my colonoscopy. It's a good idea to have one if you've never had it before! You'll be in the best sleep you've ever had, and never know it was done:)
I think the endoscopy is standard procedure. I've had one already and I don't even have a surgery date yet. I've also had a swallow test (not the scientific name) which was much more stressful than the endoscopy because you're awake for the swallow test. I think the theory is, if you can handle all the testing before the surgery, you feel like the surgery itself will be manageable.
It depends on your surgeon...
I was required to undergo an upper GI endoscopy approximately two weeks before the surgery so any unforeseen problems with my upper GI anatomy would be known well in advance.
A hiatal hernia was discovered during my upper GI scope, so my bariatric surgeon performed a hernia repair at the same time he created my sleeve. Getting the upper GI scope can potentially knock out two birds with one stone.
Thank you for all the replies. I watch 600 lb life (my favorite show) and I notice he does it to some people and wanted to see how many of you had it or didn't have it.
I had one in August and my surgery was in November.
I think the practice I was in wanted to see whether you had a hiatal(SP?) hernia before surgery. That determines whether you can do sleeve or bypass better.
No, I didn't have an endoscopy before my VSG surgery. But a small hiatal hernia was visible to the surgeon during surgery -- so he did a little nip/tuck hernia repair during the VSG surgery.
Yes, my surgeon always does them. I had not symptoms but discovered hiatal hernia and C-Diff. Hernia was repaired with the surgery. C-Diff required nasty antibiotics and had to be clear before surgery. So it is important check.
I'm having my upper G.I tomorrow, and am not looking forward to drinking that swill. The surgeon mentioned if there were a hiatal hernia, he would repair during surgery. If there was some complication once in there, and he wanted to do a bypass.... no thank you. Just patch me up.
I had a hiatal hernia repair during my sleeve in 2013. I had an endoscopy two weeks ago and I have another hiatal hernia. My concern is that I don't have enough stomach to fix hernia. Will meet with bariatric surgeon this month.
