Mini Gastric Bypass and medication that goes to waste
5 months ago I removed my LapBand because it damaged my esophagus, I had very bad acid reflux. Now I am recovering and soon to have a new weight loss surgery. I am thinking between Sleeve and Mini gastric Bypass. I would like to get Mini GBP because there is no problem with acid reflux but I am afraid that medication I have to take will go to waste (is that what it means by 'malabsorption'). I am bipolar and I take some serious psychiatric medication. What if it goes to waste since part of the food goes to waste too. Stomach doesn't know the difference, right? Am I right? Does anyone have experience with that problem?

I've never heard of the mini gastric bypass. Must be new. I love my sleeve!

Sounds like a question for your surgeon.
Re: Mini Gastric Bypass and medication that goes to waste
No gastric reflux but MDD/GAD & daily med. I had a sleeve and did not have to make any changes in med until weight loss hit a point where I needed a lower dose.
I do NOT have gastric reflux but eat very slowly at all most 3 years out - never have liquids 30 m before or after a meal. Talk to whoever is in charge of your medication....then your bariatric surgeon.
Your mental health is critical!

thank you so much for answering! I don't know what is MDD/GAD
Re: Mini Gastric Bypass and medication that goes to waste
Hi,
I would talk with your surgeon and mental health provider. I personally would go with the bypass, as it really should help the reflux. I had a Sleeve 3 years ago, and my GERD/reflux has just gotten worse since then, but I suffered with it for years before my sleeve surgery, so I was reluctant to do it in the first place. I think the doctors at my clinic really push for the sleeve, because of less complications. I don’t regret having the sleeve, I just wish I had fought harder for a bypass due to the reflux issues. I still would like to switch to a bypass to help with this, but not sure how to make it through all the hoops. My reflux did slightly improve for about 4-6 months when I had my gallbladder removed two years after my sleeve surgery. I still avoid a LOT of foods due to reflux, which really limits what I can eat that is healthier. Hope this helps a bit. Feel free to send a message if you have more specific questions :)

thank you so much for answering! Are you happy with your weight loss? I can see that you lost only 50 lbs in 3 years?
Re: Mini Gastric Bypass and medication that goes to waste
Hey there, I am a bit disappointed that I have not lost more weight. I lost those 50 lbs. in the first 3 months after my surgery. I can’t seem to get under 200, no matter what I try. But, the good news is that I’ve been able to maintain the weight loss for almost 3 years, which my doctor says is the hardest thing. They seem happy with it, but I still want to lose more. I started seeing a therapist and that has helped a lot.

I am so sorry you are not losing more weight. Now I am scared that I won't either
