Wait times in Canada are Crazy
Being a Canadian and in need of Gastric Surgery I decided to travel to Mexico. Our wait time is 1-5 years and if not a heftyy price tag of close to $25000.00 for the sleeve. I had such amazing success with my surgery I designed a company and program to help others out. I designed the company so the individuals who are unsure of who to see and where to go and the main thing is to ensure safety.
Do your homework and like me you will never look back.
Re: Wait times in Canada are Crazy
I'm in the Greater Toronto area and I had no problem with wait times. I saw the surgeon on a Friday and had the surgery 5 days later! Maybe I was just lucky. My surgeon was excellent, my recovery quick and I'm so happy I had it done!
Re: Wait times in Canada are Crazy
I heard that about eastern Canada. I am not sure if you were self pay or not but in Alberta, B.C and Manitoba there can be up to 3-5 year waits. As a self pay the prices in Canada are nuts thus Mexico as an option.
Re: Wait times in Canada are Crazy

Re: Wait times in Canada are Crazy
Wait times are insane in Alberta
And I did not qualify for it to be done as I was not big enough, no diabetes or other health issues other than obesity
Oh I wasn't big enough.... Then why did I go thru the weight wise clinic and waste a year
Had it done in Mexico
Amazing service and care
More pre-op and post instructions than what my hubby got, and he got a roux en here!
Re: Wait times in Canada are Crazy
I had the same experience in 2012. Not heavy enough...go gain more weight. Went to MX great care lots of info. The first thing after surg. I did not need my meds (diabeties, bp and chol) . I am med free, had a knee replacement with very easy recovery, and I will be 72 in 10 days...have never felt better. What are they thinking...this surg is not just about getting the weight off (we have all done that) it is the tool to make it possible to keep it off forever. Good for you.
Re: Wait times in Canada are Crazy
That's amazing!
No meds and almost 72!!!! Awesome, you are an inspiration to all of us!
You should be very proud thenewmetoday!!!
Re: Wait times in Canada are Crazy
I too went to Mexico because of the 2 to 3 year wait in Canada.
I could have got in sooner IF I had diabetes (which runs in my family).
My whole idea was to get rid of the weight BEFORE I became a diabetic!
Glad I went to Mexico and the savings were amazing as well so a bonus.
Good Luck and God Bless!
Re: Wait times in Canada are Crazy
Hello All,
Mexico is amazing and the surgeons are top notch. I too have been luck and blessed to have had the surgery. I also felt that it was time to help people so I decided to set up a top notch Bariatric referral company one which offers the clients many ways to succeed. Without the support many fail in the long run. Good luck to all
Re: Wait times in Canada are Crazy
I was lucky and my GP referred me to a Weight Management Program here in Alberta. I took classes, saw a social workers, various Rn's, various NUT's. This took roughly six months and then I was one of the lucky ones approved for surgery. My BMI was quite high plus I had other health problems so maybe thats why I was approved so quickly. I had the surgery six weeks later. Fast forward almost one year.

Love your success story! I have done the waiting 'dance' in Ottawa for about two years. Finally I got to see the nurse (after multiple visits with the prep psychologist and the nutritionists). One of the nutritionists advised that my Osteopenia would turn into full-blown Osteoporosis with the Roux-en-Y. I was told that the sleeve is rarely done here.
Feeling disillusioned. I have learned a lot on this journey, however. Don't think I will be going ahead with *any* surgery.

Was your surgery covered by Medicare, or was it private, at a cost to you?
Thanks,
