Will I ever eat pasta or bread again?
Hi All! I work at Lane Bryant and a customer who had the surgery 8 months ago has been coming in for awhile. She had the rouxe and y but she said I would never eat breads or pastas again. Is this true? Granted she had the rouex in y (sp?) but maybe just in her case. Whats the truth?:)
Re: Will I ever eat pasta or bread again?
RNY is way different and has alot of side effects that we don't need to worry about enjoying. Can you eat pasta and bread again? Yes. Will you WANT to? Probably not. When your main goal is to get your protein in first, then veggies.. there isn't any room left for the carby foods. Doesn't mean you can't eat these things again ever, it just means that in order to get your nutrition, you probably shouldn't/won't.
I personally believe that I've been on a diet for the last 15 years and they didn't work. I'm not about to get 85% of my stomach removed and then be on a diet for the rest of my life TOO. Following the protein first rule is working for me and I've had carbs along the way. I've lost 42 lbs in 3 months. Could I lose faster? Probably. But this is how I'm chosing to live the rest of my life, not just the next 6-12 months... YMMV :)
Re: Will I ever eat pasta or bread again?
Dont worry about giving up ur favs u just have to make sure you get your protiens first. I enjoy angel hair pasta and other pasta but only a bite or two. Im one month out and have lost 38 lbs and dont regret my sleeve one bit!
Re: Will I ever eat pasta or bread again?
Thanks for the encouragement to both of you:) I have been researching and researching all the ways to eat healthy . I just have moments where I think "can I overcome the emotional part of eating?" Nacho chips and salsa are huge part of why I am fat. I am sure I will feel like ya'all and not want to sabatoge my new lifestyle but I have that emotional aspect too. I will make it:) Thanks again.
Re: Will I ever eat pasta or bread again?
You will be able to if you want it. I am about 4 1/2 months out, pasta really feels like it expands in my stomach. I just think it's too hard to get protein and eat pasta. I don't have any side effects, though. I think it will be ok for a treat, just not get used to eating it.
Re: Will I ever eat pasta or bread again?
I think your right. I have been thinking about breads and pasta and how they will fit into my new life. I am just accepting what comes but as you contemplate the new and improved lifestyle before surgery I guess I really have no way of knowing what it will really be like. I am in the acceptance phase of changing my mind I suppose:) Thank you so much for sharing your experience with me.
Re: Will I ever eat pasta or bread again?
I haven't had pasta or the desire for pasta and I am two months out. I have a half of piece of bread every now and then (with turkey or something on top). I even had half a hamburger. It fills you up. The better choice is always to go breadless and eat more protein, but every now and then I do feel like I want bread. Not this week though.
Re: Will I ever eat pasta or bread again?
My husband and I went to dinner with friends last night, ...Mexican. Yum. I had 2 or 3 chips and salsa while waiting for the meal. I ordered one chicken taco (softshell) ala carte. I ate about half of it with the tortilla, then unrapped it and ate the rest of the chicken and veggies without the tortilla. It was really good. I enjoyed my meal just as much as everyone else did, and enjoyed the night out. I even had a bite of my husband's burrito.
Re: Will I ever eat pasta or bread again?
Im sure you will someday. I am three months out and I eat about everything. The only thing I just cant eat is bread. I loved bread with all my heart before surgery and now im terrified of it. Ive tried it two or three times and it made me feel horrible. I guess it expands in ur little stomach and it causes pressure. It just made me sick. So now im afraid of it. which could be a good thing for me, I can go without the extra carbs. Pastas I do ok with, but I try to stay away from them as much as possible. I choose to have tofu noodles which are great anyway you make them. Ive done stirfry, fettuccini, soups, spaghetti, you name it. they are high in protein also. But like I said you will be able to eat anything you want as long as your new stomach agrees and you be careful on what you eat (moderation) No worries and good luck!

I'm interested in tofu noodles. Where do you get those, how do you cook them?

Tofu noodles are GREAT---they are in the cooler section at the grocery store. In WalMart over by the veggies, in Rosuars (sp) in the healthy food section. Be sure that you rinse the heck out of them because when you open them the really stink. OK, now I know that you are going to smell them--hahahaha As for the bread and spaghetti --- I have been told that I can have anything I want after my sleeve gets in---but I probably wont even want them. Only you guys know how excited that I am to turn my nose up to ANYTHING that resembles food!!!! I can't wait to feel NOT HUNGRY!!!!!!!!!!

I get them at albertsons, thats the only place that ive found them at. they are where all the produce and tofu is. they are called shirataki noodles. You rinse them out, then boil them for a couple of minutes and cook them with whatever ingredients you want. They are really good stir frying them with veggies and teriyaki sauce. but like I said you can make them with anything.
Re: Will I ever eat pasta or bread again?
YES you can eat pasta and bread again. Just not very much of it. I bought the Pepperidge Farm deli thins - whole wheat and can eat 1/2 with tuna or chicken salad on it. Last night for dinner, I had chilli mac. I only had 2/3 cup of it, but boy was it good!! Savored every bite. I am 7 wks. post op and I have lost 38 lbs since surgery and 48 lbs since I started the process. I'm feeling pretty good. I am starting to go to Planet Fitness 3 times a week, so weight should start dropping faster after I get into that routine. At any rate, I feel much better and dropped 3 pants sizes. I am losing inches and have been told not to totally rely on scale. As you begin to exercise, you get more muscle which weighs more than fat. I am just waiting to see where I am Aug. 30 - 12 wks post op. By then, I will be totally into MY program, which I plan to continue for the rest of my life.
Re: Will I ever eat pasta or bread again?
Congrats on your numbers. Did you mean 1/2 slice a bread or a half of sandwich? Just curious because I can do a half of sandwich. I worry about that.
Re: Will I ever eat pasta or bread again?
Yes, I meant 1/2 deli thin sandwich. I also had a whole deli thin this morning toasted with peanut butter on it, but with the tuna or chicken salad, we can only hold 1/2. Hope this helps.
