confusion about protein, fat and carbs post surgery

i am coming to mexico for dr almanza
but i did consult w a dr here in connecticut
he told me NO CARBS EVER

my question

1) i have seen many people reverse diabetes and obesity w plant based diet which is NO meats so limited protein and all carbs
(even tho the carbs are veg) is this ok?

2) are oats ok? they are carbs but they are starch resistant/low gi also w cinnamon to mitigate blood sugar spike - is this ok?

3) some drs say protein lean only...yet protein alone causes insulin response and some say FATTY meat is better FATTY meat causes less insulin response.

I am asking here because i have had different doctors and different friends tell me different experiences

so in summary
can i do veggies and oats and NO animal products?

if i do pro only can i do fatty proteins is that better than lean?

egg whites better than egg w yolks etc?

full fat cottage cheese or yogurt better than low fat / fat free etc?

I will let one of the long time folks answer this, but basically

1) after surgery liquids only as your doctor instructs
2) then pureed or soft foods (for protein lots of folks do fat free refried beans that are thinned out, as an example.

3) Lifetime rule - lean protein daily, then dense carbs (healthy vegetables) and then other carbs IF you have room. After sleeve you wont.

At 2 years out, I do have oatmeal, about 1/4 C cooked with soy milk. I do have an occasional low carb tortilla wrap, or corn tortilla. I do not eat an entire "anything" any more. I'm not hungry, don't have room.

I eat about 1300 calories a day with 40-50 grams of protein. NO fat is not butter than low fat. Fat free often has chemicals or sugar added.

Try watching Dr. Vuong Weight Loss Surgery You Tube. It will answer a myriad of questions and bust some myths.

that's only 200-250 cals...

or do you mean 40-50 gm per meal?

can you tell me what you typically eat in a day?
i am curious what a day of eating looks like a year out from surgery

No carbs ever? That sounds crazy to me. Maybe he's talking about 6 weeks following surgery. But forever? Like you're going to go the rest of your life without ever eating a piece of pizza? Or for the rest of your life without ever having a piece of bread? That sounds like a speedy trip to regain to me, because it's unrealistic, and you'll cave. Especially since whole grains and fruit are so good for you and technically carbs.

As far as your questions, lean proteins are the best.

Going plant based is fine, but I would say most people here are not all plant based. I am plant based for breakfast and lunch (get protein from grains, greens, beans, etc) and a lean protein based dinner. I do eat more fish than meat, but I eat meat.

Oats are good for you but I don't eat them often. I eat eggs, in fact had 2 eggs a day for breakfast for 6 years. Then I found Dr. Yuong on YouTube and have a green smoothie instead for breakfast. Just had my cholesterol checked, so I'm interested to see if this switch made a difference.

After surgery you'll follow your doctors orders, (like no salads for a while!) but for long term please watch "Real Talk: Busting the PROTEIN Myth after Weight Loss Surgery." It explains a lot.

Until you are ready to eat solids, you should follow the eating guidelines from your team. I had to start with liquids, puree, soft foods, then regular foods. Regarding eating whole foods plant based. I am starting my third week of eating no meat and no dairy (except for yogurt). You can still gain a lot of protein without eating meat. Can a brand new sleeve handle this so soon? I'm not sure. I'm six years out. I think you should wait and see how you do tolerating grains, lettuce, veggies first before you go plant based.

I am 5'4" tall and weigh 133 (this morning) (so over a hundred pounds from highest weight).

The protein grams for me are per day. Early on, I did more protein, but maintenance took some figuring out.

A typical day for me:
1) Breakfast - either a protein drink in my decaf, or a green smoothie (fruit, 1/2 avocado, spinach or sweet kale, hemp hearts, soy milk & ice) OR 1/2 C oatmeal with almond milk & hemp hearts; or on occassion, 1 piece crispy patted out fat bacon, 1 egg, 12 grain 1 slice bread no butter. Not always a breakfast person.
2) Lunch: Almost always a big salad with kale, spinach, protein like tuna or chicken (or whatever I have) with feta cheese. I tend to do low fat dressing, but I seldom finish the salad.
3) Dinner: depends on the previous meals, but always a protein first, then a vegatable (love roasted vegetables). Or sometimes a low fat Greek yogurt. Or 1 slice thin crust pizza, or whatever I feel like.

Since I'm not as active as some younger people, I stay about 1300 calories a day, but I try to make sure every calorie is a nutritional one. That said, I have had cookies, candy, pie, etc. I don't do alcohol, but just never particularly liked so not because of sleeve.

I think at this point, I finding logging my nutrition/calories helps me stay at the same or less than goal.

I don't feel deprived.

I do eat S L O W L Y and fill up very quickly.
