Pre Op Diet... I need help
Hi Everyone,
This is my first post :) I am scheduled for August 13th and so excited!!!! I have a question about the pre op diet everyone followed. Did everyone do 2 weeks liquid. I have been trying to test it put wit replacing at least on meal with a protein shake... but its hard??? Seems impossible to do it for 2 weeks!!
Also I will be on vacation the first 3 days I am supposed to be on it. Do you think I can at least have protein and a veggie for dinner?
Help!
Re: Pre Op Diet... I need help
Hi, welcome here!
Every hospital seems to have its own requirement.
What does your bariatric team tell you?
Some are strictly 3 or 4 shakes per day, others allow you some lean protein and some veggies.
In any case: follow their rules, that is all I can say.
Re: Pre Op Diet... I need help
Follow whatever your surgical team wants you to. Every doctor is different. Now isn't the time to start making up your own rules.
I had to do 5 days of liquids, was at a friend's lake house for the weekend, and just packed a ton of protein drinks. I even froze the chocolate ones, tasted sort of like a Wendy's frosty. Had to watch everyone else eat and drink, but whatever, I enjoyed the friendship and the lake fun.
That lake trip I was huge, the next year's lake trip I was rocking an actual bathing suit! (I hadn't worn a bathing suit in years, I would sweat at the beach in capris). In other words whatever they tell you to do will be SO worth it!

Thank you.... Im a little nervous!
Re: Pre Op Diet... I need help
That is only natural, a lot of us were nervous before surgery.
Big changes are coming your way, sometimes it may be challenging, but also a lot of fun!
Watching the pounds come off, feeling better in just a few months, all those neat nsv's, priceless!
This is exciting stuff.
Re: Pre Op Diet... I need help
Mine was a 10 day diet. 7 days of lean protein and veggies and 3 days liquid. Every program is different and each individual is different. Follow your surgeon's instructions. The time will fly by.
Re: Pre Op Diet... I need help
Can you contact your team's nut and ask her if you can change the guideline?
My surgeon's guideline was actually two weeks of shakes too, but I was allowed to have a low carb dinner each day, with fish or chicken, with low carb veggies.
But it's better to follow your surgeon's instructions and not what other doctors told their patients, because we are all different. The main reason for that pre-op diet is to shrink the liver since it's going to be lifted during the surgery to get access to the stomach, so it's better to get the liver as lean as possible, most obese patients have a fatty liver, and it can brittle during the surgery, that's why it's important to really stay low carb and lose weight during the pre-op diet. You can do it!!
Re: Pre Op Diet... I need help
Everyone seems to be different. I was 3 weeks Optifast. 3 products a day - which ever I wanted. I went for 2 shakes and a bar. It was probably the worst part of the whole process but even then it wasn't too bad. I knew that it was for a finite period of time and that the end result meant an easier surgery.
Whatever you are advised to do I would do it.
Re: Pre Op Diet... I need help
Welcome! It’s normal to feel nervous ;-)
My Bari Team was explicit about the pre-op diet and not varying from their plan for me. Whenever I had questions, they were happy to help.
I wasn’t on full liquids until 3 days before surgery. Previous 2 weeks were 1 protein heavy dinner and protein drinks the rest of the day, along with a gallon of water.
Best of luck as you embark on this amazing journey.

Totally normal to be nervous. But like I said, it is SO worth it. Can you even imagine being a regular-sized, healthy person? Priceless.
IMO, the pre-op diet was the only difficult thing about the whole journey. Or maybe difficult isn't the word, it just wasn't fun. Everything else was fun.
Re: Pre Op Diet... I need help
sraebaer, I like the way you use the term "regular-sized" and I am very cognizant not to use the word, "skinny". I also say it's nice to be a "normal-sized" person in society and how much easier it is to fit into a crowd:) I personally don't like to be called "skinny" as I think it has a certain meaning sort of like the opposite of "fat" which I find neither word positive!

I have been saying "regular" or "normal" sized forever! That was my goal. I got there. I occasionally have my moments of being jealous of super skinny people here, but typically get over it quickly when I realize I am strong and healthy. I used to continually ask my husband "If you didn't know me and saw me walking down the street, would you just think I was a regular sized person?" Now he just tells me to shut up so I don't ask anymore!!

Sraebaer, he tells you to shut up and it works? I need to talk to him...lol
Re: Pre Op Diet... I need help
I had the surgery 5 days ago. I have had no issues regarding hunger or anything. Sore yes hungry no.
Re: Pre Op Diet... I need help
I was on a strict 2 week liquid only diet. It was tough for the first 3 days but then it was easy. I lost 19 lbs in those two weeks. my Doctor was very pleased. Remember liquid means liquid. Protein shakes and strained soups. Don't change the rules now, this pre op diet will make your surgery go easier and jump start your weight loss. Good luck.
