High Total Cholesterol 6 months post op
I am 6 months post op, lost 27kg (60 pounds) and feel great. I always used to check my glucose and cholesterol levels with a at home kit prior to surgery so yesterday I did the same. To my surprise my total cholesterol level is quite high! I never had a problem with high cholesterol in my life so i am really puzzled. I thought loosing all this weight would make it better not worse?
Anyone else experience the same ?
Re: High Total Cholesterol 6 months post op
No. But lots of things affect the accuracy of readings as you know.
I have serious CAD + history of strokes related to cholesterol. I take Repatha SureClik injection x 2 month, plus a small statin. Mine stays low. I don't think the sleeve changes our genetic/herditary issues although it helps.
Maybe a doctor check is in order? HUGS
Re: High Total Cholesterol 6 months post op
I had the exact same problem at 9 months out. I'm scheduled for a follow up in May to see if it has gone back down. My doctor recommended that I cut out red meat and eat a diet of primarily fish. My cholesterol pre-surgery was on the higher side but nothing like it was at my 9 month check up. For reference, I'm 14 months post surgery and have lost 80 lbs.
Re: High Total Cholesterol 6 months post op
I have always had high cholesterol, thanks to my family. My surgeon let me go off my meds for 3 months after surgery and it skyrocketed again. Back on meds. But that doesn't answer your question, sort of odd. Are you eating things you didn't eat before like red meat, eggs, and cheese? But maybe it's been proven that those kinds of foods don't matter. Good luck, sorry to be no help.
Maybe your at home kit is inaccurate.

Google "cholesterol rise during rapid weight loss" (or similar phrasing). It's possible that it's just transient because your body is breaking down your own body fat.

Thank you for your replies. I do eat a mainly protein based diet as its really the only way i can loose weight. Having said that I mainly eat seafood.
I did look at cholesterol rise during rapid weight loss and I am hoping that’s what it is. Otherwise it really doesn’t make sense that I never had raised cholesterol and develop it after loosing all this weight.
