12 days post op questions
Hi, I have been on shakes for a week now (can get 2 premier protein over 1 day and a soup) and this is my first day of significant heartburn! Lasting all day! I took my smashed prescriptions in water prior to my first 1/2 shake and wonder if maybe it burnt my stomach? But I think I have done that before- the shake type and flavor was not new... my doc said I probably drank to big of sips - but you would think as the day wore on and I made a conscious effort to slip slower that it would subside significantly. Did anyone have onset of acid indigestion at about 2 weeks post op? Is this a growing pain of the process? Lemon water seemed to help most ... any other secrets out there? Thanks!
Re: 12 days post op questions
I had acid indigestion that you speak of, but the difference in how it was handled was that prior to being released from the hospital, my surgeon prescribed an anti-acid pill and two separate nausea pills (that was what really took a toll on me - nausea.) Having kept on a strict regimen of these medications for the first two to three weeks made all of the difference in the world. But he never said I should crush them prior to consuming them. I was able to swallow them whole one at a time with small sips.
Regarding drinking larger sips: I think that is entirely possible as we are used to taking larger swallows of liquids prior to surgery. The best advice I can provide would be to slow down. Even if you feel depleted, don't gulp anything. Sip in shorts bursts, allowing each swallow to go down completely before taking another sip. Speaking from experience, having taken larger sips caused significant pain which in turn served as a quick reminder to slow down.
I hope this helps in answering your questions. Have a great rest of your weekend!
Re: 12 days post op questions
I was prescribed Omeprazole 20mgs and have been taking that daily post op and have had no indigestion at all. I am supposed to continue this until my three month check up. I am wondering if I will get indigestion when not on this medication.. I wonder if you are sensitive to the shakes? Have you tried another brand? It could also be the meds but I wouldn't think that would last all day.
Re: 12 days post op questions
This morning a victory so far! I drink my half shake very slowly this morning. My crush the pills I ate with a little bit of yogurt. I take my prescribed in acid as usual. So far I am so comfortable after yesterday. Thank you so much you too for reminding me exactly what I should be doing. Number one ☝️SLOW DOWN :)
Re: 12 days post op questions
Hi Kate Congrats on your surgery. I was able to take my tablets whole too, they seem to advise differently in different places on that. I had acid reflux just once or twice which was ugh as I hadn't even had it when pregnant! I did get antacids prescribed though as a general thing so maybe it would have been worse if I hadn't had them. I also remember it happening once when I ate too late and then went to bed. Hope it was just a one off thing and best wishes for a fast recovery :-)
Re: 12 days post op questions
I had heartburn the first few months post op. It is possible to have sipped to big or it could be the medication. Or standard heartburn. I would try to take an antacid. See how things go.
Re: 12 days post op questions
I was on heartburn meds the first month after surgery. I guess it's what my surgeon gives everyone. After that month I had no issues at all. Feel better!

Recovery after surgery is difficult
Re: 12 days post op questions
Have you considered consulting your surgeon regarding the ongoing heartburn issue and the possibility of adjusting your medication or exploring other remedies for a more comfortable recovery?
