What does a gallbladder attack feel like?
I had pain last night that lasted about 4 hours, but feel fine this morning. It was not tummy pain, or heartburn. It was higher than my stomach....slightly below my breasts. I don't want to go to the Dr. unless it happens again, but just courious if this sounds like gallbladder. Thanks!
Re: What does a gallbladder attack feel like?
Yes it sure sounds like one. My husband says im a lil dramatic about telling my story with gallstones, but ugh the pain was worse than childbirth for crying out loud!!!
Did you eat somehthing harder to digest? - The more you have in your tummy, the more bile your pancereas is told to create...so if you have a stone blocking your duct, the bile is backing up in your pancreas and holy crap it hurts. The pain will subside when the stone passes...but dont risk it, some stones are tiny, and some are NOT...the later can cause pancreaitis (yeah i spelled that wrong).
So yeah id say go to the doc...
Ive said it before, gallstones were created in Hell for the devils own amusement!!!!!!!
Re: What does a gallbladder attack feel like?
I had my gallbladder removed several years ago after one of my attempts at a high protein diet. I thought I was having a heart attack. Horrible pains in my chest, right about where your diaphram is. It was agony for hours. I went to the ER they tell me oh its your gallbladder after and ultra sound and some blood work and scheduled me for surgery a few weeks later. I had a couple more attacks like that but really nothing major until they removed it. It was similar to the sleeve surgery in the pain after and then I was fine. I have a few food hiccups like fatty foods go right through me, but other than that, everything was normal.
Re: What does a gallbladder attack feel like?
Yes it does sound like a gall bladder attack to me, however I am not a medical person only one who has suffered and eventually had her gall bladder removed.
The pain is very severe and goes on for a few hours sometimes spreading around the back as well. This can occur at any time of the day or night and you may not have another for a while, or not at all if the stones have moved.
To be sure do go and have this checked out as a simple ultra sound will revel if you have stones. Good luck.
Re: What does a gallbladder attack feel like?
I just had my gall bladder out four weeks ago. The pain, for me, started off right in the middle, right at the bottom of the rib cage and felt like a bunch of gas was going to make my belly explode. That particular pain subsided a bit, but then it changed to pain going from that spot all the way around my right side to the back. It is different for different people, but the pain you're describing is most likely to be gall bladder.
It could be your appendix (sounds funny, but that is how appendicitis first presents itself), but it _usually_ never tails off and just gets worse and worse.
If you're having bad attacks regularly, you should go to the ER and have them take it out.
Re: What does a gallbladder attack feel like?
It was actually the second time this has happened and was much worse than the first time. It was excrutiating and happened a few minutes after I ate something, so I figured that it was my gallbladder. .so, I'll make a Dr. appt next week and get it checked out. Thanks everyone!
Re: What does a gallbladder attack feel like?
Your liver makes bile (not your pancreas--pancreas, in terms of food, makes and releases insulin and other GI hormones) and it is stored in the gallbladder. As the bile is concentrated in the gallbladder, some of the components of the bile may precipitate out and that is how stones form. Bile is secreted by the gall bladder into the duodenum after being signaled by change in pH when churned food from the stomach is released into the first part of the duodenum. This bile helps dissolve the fats from your food. Many people have gall stones and have no symptoms. The symptoms come from a gallbladder that is inflamed and mildly infected -or- as described above, when a stone either blocks the bile duct or gets stuck in the bile duct. That pain is usually very sharp and unrelenting until the stone passes.
An attack of acute cholecystitis usually begins about 20 min or so after eating and can feel like anything from mild heart burn to pain much as david described above with pain radiating to your back or shoulder.

Re: What does a gallbladder attack feel like?
Gall baldder pain is generally felt directly below the center of the right breast. Sounds like you got it. I wouldn't panic though. The only treatment is to remove the darn thing, and you don't want to go through that unless it gets really bad.
Some people have one or two attacks and never are troubled again.
If you develop a seriously hot gall bladder, you will definitely want it removed, but until that time, avoid fatty foods. Good luck.
