Gaining weight to qualify for surgery
Hi everyone !
I am 8 lbs away from qualifying for surgery. My BMI is currently 38.7.It has to be 40 or above for my insurance to cover it. I have no severe comorbities. I am pre-diabetic, have elevated cholesterol, and depression. However I don't think those qualify. Did anyone gain weight to qualify for surgery? I'm desperate !

Heh, heh ....
No, but I've heard that some have slipped some little half-pound weights into pockets, bra, underwear, etc., worn heavy jewelry, heavy shoes, heavy clothing, etc. for qualification weigh-ins.
However, gaining weight to qualify one's BMI for insurance approval has also occurred.
Or so I've heard. ;)
Re: Gaining weight to qualify for surgery
That's crazy. Your BMI puts you in the obese category. I was self pay so did not have to do anything before surgery, but I think if I had to gain 8 pounds to qualify I'd do it. Or add some "tricks" like drink a ton of water before weigh in, wear heavy clothes, jewlery, boots, etc. Just jeans weigh a few pounds. Good luck!
Re: Gaining weight to qualify for surgery
I am seriously considering gaining those 8lbs !
Re: Gaining weight to qualify for surgery
I'm suppose to gain 8 lbs in one week. When you try to lose, you gain, but when you try to gain, you can't seem to get the scale to budge.
Re: Gaining weight to qualify for surgery
I would totally be caring liters of water on my person if it was only 8 lbs. I was self-pay because even with severe co morbidities, my BMI was too low (38).
Re: Gaining weight to qualify for surgery
I eat, drink all I can, but I just can't seem to get the pounds on. Kinda of ironic, don't you think?
Re: Gaining weight to qualify for surgery
I actually posted this exact same question a couple of months ago. I decided to gain the weight. I normally don't drink soda, and decided to drink a ton of coke and it worked. Im 4 months into my 6 month dietitian suppervised diet and i found out that my bmi has to stay above 40 until my last appointment. Kind of sucks because I'm walking a very narrow line of maintaining my weight.
