When did you have your first alcoholic drink?
Okay so I know the advice is to not drink for 6 months and I know about transfer addiction, high calories etc. But I do love a glass of wine and in fact I do love a dry martini but gawd that is pure rocket fuel so I won't be trying that for a while!
My question is when did you have a glass of wine or whatever after your surgery and how did you go? I'd quite fancy a glass :-)
Re: When did you have your first alcoholic drink?
I've never had alcohol after my sleeve.
I just don't seem to care.
And I made this new rule for myself: if I don't care about some drink or food, it is not going into my mouth..
Re: When did you have your first alcoholic drink?
It never bothered me, I'd say I had my first glass of wine at about 5 months. My doctor said the reason they don't recommend it is the empty calories.
Just be really careful, because you can't drink like you used to. Or like anyone else you are hanging around with. I've learned that lesson. Sticking to the one drink rule is probably a really good idea.
Re: When did you have your first alcoholic drink?
Hi,
I have never been a big drinker, but I do occasionally have a drink with friends. I think I had my first bit of wine about 3 months post-op. I felt like I tolerated it well, although I didn't have much (it was too dry). I still seem to have about the same tolerance as I did before, I don't seem to get drunk quicker, like many people say they do. But, then again, I am just having a few sips here and there, and no more than a glass at a time. I also drink it slowly, like I do with all liquids and food.
Hope this helps!
Re: When did you have your first alcoholic drink?
Stacey, honestly I had my first 'sip' of wine about 2 weeks post-op as we went to a wedding. I say 'sip' because I wasn't able to drink more than that and it gave me heartburn. Now almost 3 months post-op, I find I can enjoy a glass, sometimes 2 but that's it. This is coming from a person who could drink up to a bottle of wine by myself on a weekend night. My tastes also changed from red (cabernet) to white (chardonnay) as red still gives me heartburn. Also, I used to drink beer too occasionally but I cannot even touch it now as the carbonation is painful. I used to drink at least a glass or two of wine a night and now I have a glass or two on the weekends occasionally. Believe it or not, the surgery has helped lessen my craving for it which is a good thing.
Re: When did you have your first alcoholic drink?
Id say at about 6 weeks post op , I have been drinking in moderation since and it hasn't effected my weight loss at all
Re: When did you have your first alcoholic drink?
Stacey,
I had my first scotch at 10 weeks. It was my birthday. Prior to surgery if 1 scotch was good then 3 was great. Now I have 1 drink and I am not interested in another. I sometimes have a small ,5oz, glass of wine but no interest for anymore.
I do have one problem with you. I hesitate to bring it up but here goes. I lose a pound and you lose a kilo. That is not fair! Good job kid.

Stacy, I am 3 months out, but we have a traditional New Year's date with friends of 60+ years (childhood, lol). Any way, I am okay with 1/2 glass of wine, sipped very slowly. Then a pause of about 15-20 minutes in conversation, which by then means food is ready.
I've had Pinot Noir, Reisling & Zinfandel, but the empty calories are the bigger concern for me, so yesterday opted for CrystalLight. But I agree once in a while it's okay.
I did not ask my dr, but I've been cautious and waited to add things while at home (we're traveling), rather than "toad froth" on a trip.
Let me know how you work things out.l Just curious!
Re: When did you have your first alcoholic drink?
I had my first glass of wine 6 weeks post op. Only a few oz as that was all I could handle. But ya through Christmas break I had a glass every day and I was fine.
Re: When did you have your first alcoholic drink?
I had my first alcohol (red wine -- 1 glass, 5 ounces) 6 months post-op.
Re: When did you have your first alcoholic drink?
OK, just back from 2 weeks in California and gatherings full of "you've got to taste this" wine. I did. I toasted & tasted. I sipped, then poured the rest into my husband's glass. Sometimes I sipped a few sips. Never made it to half a glass because I felt pretty buzzed very quickly. (This from someone who could drink most grown men under the table pre-op.) I tried to observe my own reactions and discovered that I liked it but not as much as I used to. It was something social to do but I could take it or leave it.
I probably won't bother again unless it's a social occasion. But it didn't hurt my weight loss (I lost 8lbs in 2 weeks after a long stall) and I was glad to see it didn't trigger some latent desire.
Re: When did you have your first alcoholic drink?
did a wine tasting event about 4 months out. got me plastered with just a few tastes. then was almost 6 months before I drank a beer, still havent had much more than a glass of wine now and again.
Re: When did you have your first alcoholic drink?
I've had a few glasses of wine since surgery. Probably 3 total. Just have no desire to drink alcohol anymore, so I don't.
One glass of wine and I'm pretty loopy. Besides the 3 glasses of wine,, I have not touched a beer or anything else(hard liquor) since surgery, and don't plan on it, ever again......
Re: When did you have your first alcoholic drink?
Arn't you a lovely bunch! Thanks for the answers. It's really great to know other peoples experiences. A good bit of advice I was given was to be with someone you trust with your life if you are going to have a drink, That's probably wise. I think i would just stick with one drink though or a 1/4 of a glass at first :-)
I dunno, I might wait till 6 months but I have got a couple of holidays coming up so who knows.
Thanks peaches xxx

Glenn I once had a very fun evening in Sydney and had planned a long run the next day. I do remember the heaving as I ran by the Sydney Opera House with a bunch of docs yelling 'lets sprint the steps'!!!! I was like gahhhhhhhhhh. Getting hammered and running don't mix so if I had a run planned I would be like nahhhhhhhh not keen on repeating that experience LOL!!!! :-)
