Did you really change before the surgery?
Ok so I had my second psych appointment today and she told me to start making the life style changes now...as far as portion control and choosing healthier foods... I am like ok I will try but in the back of my mind I am thinking the Holidays are coming and I want to EAT EAT EAT!!... i know sad :(... I honestly want to make the change but I feel like if I tell myself no you can't have something then I am going to make it worse and the cravings will be stronger... so what do you do before you even have a surgery date? I have two more months of supervised weigh ins and I have lost about 5-7 Lbs give or take... but my head says ok I need to start the change now but the fat girl in me says you better eat it while you still can... OMG!! I feel like such a cow b/c I do have the best of intentions but I want to EAT!!!!!! Any suggestions or stories that would help would be great! You guys are the best!

Might not be a bad idea to start practicing how life will be whenyou get the surgery for sure.

Re: Did you really change before the surgery?
My ins. required 3 months of working with a dietician so I had to change....It is easier if you make some changes...the holidays were ok because my stomach was use to eating small amounts of food so when I tried to shovel the food in at Thanksgiving I got really sick mind you this was pre op...Good Luck

Re: Did you really change before the surgery?
I am iin day 5 of pre-op diet. I tried to change for many years - on again off again - with weight watchers and a nutritionist. it worked temporarily, but this tool I AM PRAYING will partly force the change to be forever.
I am in day 5 of my pre op diet and it is hard, i am not going to lie. But i realizzed tonight, in many ways, i am becomming accustomed to it somewhat. I had to sit in a restaurant with my staff and watch them eat italian food. i am not on a total liquid diet, but an all protien, no sugar 1200 cal pre op diet. i had a choice. have some broth from soup or eat fat and carbs. i think i am changing because the old me would have said screw it and went for the gusto. BUT right now, if not for anything else, i understand the importance of the pre-op diet, to shrink my liver and get as much fat out if it as I can before the surgery.
Am i changing before the surgery, i hope so. behaviors and thoughts...

I think we can alter our behavior for a very short period of time because we have a short term goal to meet (surgery) but I think it is unrealistic for nutritionists and psych's to ask people to make drastic "life style changes" before surgery. If you are hungry, no amount of will power or discipline will make that go away. If it were that easy, we wouldn't be having surgery. Right?
Just shake your head in agreement and try to do your best but no one is expecting you to move mountains before surgery. Look at it this way.....you are just fulfilling the insurance company's mandate for their approval. Many people on this board have gone the self pay route without all the nutrition/psych hoops and have done great. You don't need "counseling" to be successful.....unless you have a serious food addiction and then maybe they might bring some clinical value to the table. This is just my opinion from working with the various disciplines in the hospital environment.
Re: Did you really change before the surgery?
I was on the opposite end. I actually needed to gain a few pounds before I qualified so I did not diet at all. I didn't completely pig either. I did gain about 5 Pds more than I wanted. However in my mind I constantly talked to myself. If I went to a restaurant I would firsT scan the menu for something post op friendly. Once I found it I looked for what I really wanTed and most often I went for something in the middle by choice not decadent but not diet either. Like it was said earlier if I could just make the changes when told to I wouldn't need to be sleeved. Duh!!! I am 6 days post op and doing great. Still need to keep the mind set in moderation. Yes I have had some tomato soup today not diet at all but I am not weak or frustrated either and I know that if I stay constant I can do this to reach goal. No where have I read that eating full liquids once your sleeve will allow it, has it hurt or ruined their sleeve. If I am a fool please tell me so. Knowledge is power! Peace
Re: Did you really change before the surgery?
I'm not suggesting you to not follow drs orders, I did my preop for sure. I just don't want you to feel like you can't do this. Its much harder before surgery. Your going to do great! Btw, type in cheated on preop diet in the search bar and see what happens. :)
