2nd Week Post-Op (Gravy?)
My surgery was last Wednesday. I'll be able to eat mashed potatoes in a couple of days. I was wondering if I could have gravy with them? Maybe just a plain brown gravy like you'd get at KFC? I know I can have tomato soup, and that stuff is thicker than brown gravy.
Re: 2nd Week Post-Op (Gravy?)
Personally I wouldn't eat either although I know some Dr's put those items on their list. I'm almost 9 months out and I still don't eat anything that heavy. I'd go with a scrambled egg or tuna instead!
Re: 2nd Week Post-Op (Gravy?)
I ate mashed potatoes during my soft food phase. I pureed lentil soup and used that as a gravy. Since my surgery I've been really sensitive to anything with a high fat content and most gravies just have too much fat to sit well in my new sleeve. Also I ate potatoes very sparingly because of the high carb/low protein content.
Re: 2nd Week Post-Op (Gravy?)
I see my doc again Thursday, so I'll hold off on the gravy till I see him. I'm really looking forward to the mashed potatoes though, with or without gravy!
Re: 2nd Week Post-Op (Gravy?)
How about pureed cauliflower with a little fat free sour cream? I am shocked they are suggesting that you eat mashed potatoes. My go to was fat free refried beans during this stage.
Be careful of slider foods....get your protein.
Regards,
Tommy

Protein won't be much of a problem when I get to the meat stage. I've always been a big meat eater. I'll probably have to stay away from steak and things that will take forever to chew, but I like all kinds of beef, pork, chicken, and fish.
Right now anything would be better than protein shakes and Jello. Man am I getting sick of those....
Re: 2nd Week Post-Op (Gravy?)
Agree with the others, mashed potatoes seem to be relatively nutritionally void. You should be focusing on protein. In the pureed/soft foods phase I was eating Oikos Triple Zero Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, pureed beans (pretty much any kind), meats w/broth pureed up in a food processor, tuna/egg/or chicken salad, protein shakes, creamed soups made with nonfat milk (I prefer the Fa!rlife as it is higher in protein and lactose free) etc. Good luck on your soft foods phase.
And PS-mashed cauliflower made like mashed potatoes is absolutely delicious. Would've never thought it if I hadn't tried it. :)

You don't know how your body will react to anything post surgery. You have a new stomach. I used to love fish. I still can't tolerate white flaky fish. It feels like it's stuck. Yet I do great with steak. It's all trial and error. And some things will change over time and some things won't.

Hi. I wouldn’t have none of it for now. I am day 10 and I am only having, pudding, applesauce and soup, plus
Protein shakes and liquids. Please don’t move to fast, you don’t want to get sick.
Re: 2nd Week Post-Op (Gravy?)
Lots of good ideas here. I'm sure I'll be trying several things I never tried before.
When I lost over 117 lbs many years ago, I did it by eating four quarter pound meat sandwiches per day. I didn't have much money, so it was often a 1 lb pack of bologna or luncheon loaf, or a couple of McD's saugage & egg muffens or 1/4 pounders for lunch (back when McD's was still cheap eating!) And then I had a V8 for supper. I ran 4-miles each night and lost on average nearly 4 pounds per week. I made sure that whatever meat I ate had plenty of fat content because fat keeps you from getting hungry. I'm 6'4" and just a big guy in general and extremely active, so I need quite a few calories. 1200 to 1600 per day while dieting worked like a charm back then. But I'm 58 now. While still active, I figure I'll need fewer calories this time. Maybe 1,000 to 1,200 once I'm 6-weeks out. I'm going to try to eliminate bread / flour from my life as I think that's what tends to put weight on me more than anything.
I lost 29 pounds a couple of weeks prior to the surgery and have lost 4 pounds since having it last Wednesday, and that was after gaining 2 pounds my first couple of days (mostly bloat I guess), so I feel like I'm losing a bit quicker than I should considering I'm not even exercising yet apart from some mild walking. Sometimes I get a bit dizzy. Thus I'm anxious to get something with more sustenance down me. Plus I'm hungry.
Re: 2nd Week Post-Op (Gravy?)
I would stay away from mashed potatoes. They do not have a lot of nutritional value and are not very high in protein. Protein should be your number one goal right now. I would absolutely not eat gravy. It's fattening and has no real value.
Think nutrient dense high protein..... That's where you want to be. You have so little room in your stomach that putting in less healthy nutrient dense foods only results in you not being able to eat what you need.
The mental game is really the hardest part of this thing.
Re: 2nd Week Post-Op (Gravy?)
I know some docs recommend mashed potatoes, but it's not the best option and is just empty calories. You might be a "big meat eater" but after surgery you won't and probably can't be a "big eater" of anything. It's a challenge to get protein in after 6 years so thinking it won't be difficult is probably not accurate. Also, things that "sound" like they could be tasty now that you are not eating them, might be just the type of foods that you can't tolerate any longer.
Continued success and it's a great time to start your new lifestyle with making the wisest choices possible even when moving from stage to stage of eating. I work in the bariatric surgery department at our local hospital and I've seen what "mindless" eating can do to derail patients from their goal.
Re: 2nd Week Post-Op (Gravy?)
Okay; I'll consider that. It's just that my doctor has a very small list of foods I can eat during week 2 and mashed potatoes are on it. Otherwise it's mostly just soups.
Re: 2nd Week Post-Op (Gravy?)
Mix some refried beans with chicken broth to thin them out a bit. Add Tabasco and fat free sour cream. If you like that kind of stuff. I ate that quite a bit 2 weeks out.
Re: 2nd Week Post-Op (Gravy?)
I like the idea of refried beans.
Has anybody tried any of the Campbell's Healthy Requests soups? A few of them listed as higher in protein are:
1) Bean / bacon (I probably won't try this one for a few weeks since it has meat in it.)
2) Sirloin burger w/ country vegetables (ditto)
3) Spicy vegetable chili
4) Chicken corn chowder
5) Old fashioned vegetable beef
6) New England clam chowder
I realize have to put them through the blender first. I'm wondering if something spicy like chili (number 3) would be too much for me right now? From the list I'm guessing the last three would be best for me at this stage.
