ONE month “exercise” question
It has been a month so I went to the Y the other night and thought I would just walk for a while. I have not done any real amounts of exercise as I have had a rough time. I walked for 45 mins and my upper abdomen started hurting quite a bit so I stopped. I was a little disappointed that I could not do more but I let my body guide me. It has been 2 days since then and my abdomen is still pretty sore. Does that seem normal to everyone? I am not worried it just seemed slightly odd to me. Thanks in advance.
Re: ONE month “exercise” question
Walking for 45 mins 1 month after major surgery after not doing much exercise over that month is quite ambitious. :-)
I'm not sure I was walking that much after a month and I started walking the day I got home and built up the time/distance over a period of time.
I'm glad you listened to your body and stopped.
Maybe build up slowly for a while? If you are still sore you should talk to your surgeon just to make sure everything is ok.

Re: ONE month “exercise” question
Don't go from nothing to 45 minutes of exercise, you have to work up your time/distance gradually or you will hurt or be in pain! Baby steps.
I was cleared for all exercise at 2 weeks. I was a walker, even when fat, but I still had to take it slow in the beginning. I started with a walk around my block once a day. Be careful, I even got a little dizzy occasionally those first walks. But then after 5 years I climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, so anything is possible!
Re: ONE month “exercise” question
I've kept a journal since surgery so went back to check it. I was doing 60 minutes @ 3mph on the treadmill at day 11. However (and it's a big HOWEVER), keep in mind I was doing 60 minutes @ 4-4.5mph on a daily basis before surgery as well as resistance exercise in the pool almost daily and golfing twice a week. That said, you've got to work up to things. No pain no gain does not apply in the first several weeks after surgery. I was back in the pool as soon as I was cleared by the doctor (about two weeks) and started off doing half the reps I did before surgery, gradually working my way back up. I didn't return to golf for three months as I simply didn't have the energy to do it.
Re: ONE month “exercise” question
I’m impressed you could walk that much without passing out! When I started working out after surgery I couldn’t make it more than 10-15 minutes without having to sit down because I thought I was gonna black out.
