I wonder how the US fares. Obesity is a chronic problem and a lot of people I know are not getting help from insurance companies. They are forced to pay out of pocket or just go on living with this health condition.

I have no idea about the awareness in the USA.
Anybody?

The US is wayyyyyy behind on this. We are the fattest country. The problem is that most health insurance does not cover WLS. Many specifically have it as an exclusion. I was lucky to have it on my insurance but it still had limitations and I still paid quite a bit out of pocket. Some insurance companies do have good WLS coverage but I would say the vast majority don't cover it. If you walk around here in the US the amount of obese children and adults is astounding. We have the worst diets and very sedentary lifestyles. So many people have long commutes to work and that also interferes with living a healthy lifestyle when you are spending 2 or more hours of your day in the car.
