How lovely of you to say so! I'm fortunate (in a weird way) that I have had multiple cancers & chemo, so balding/hair loss is not new. Just still a surprise that I am vain! This time it jumped ship on the crown and front, so I just took the scissors to it in the bathroom and cut it down to an inch. I look a bit like a transvestite monk, IMHO!

I had a couple of wigs in gray from last "fall out". I watched PattiesPearls YouTube on how to cut and style yourself. And I have a new one (curlier as my natural hair is/was) so I'm kind of tickled to see how that looks.

My oldest girl was here this week overnight, and she rather liked my sparse hair -- but then again, she's seen me with none at all. I do have a lovely shaped head!

I had a difficult time with the vitamins -- found gummy ones! I added biotin (gummies) and I've done well on the protein, all of my bariatric labs are normal, and I am so grateful that it has always come back. If not, wigs. Or maybe a tattoo on my head -- I've got 2 elsewhere, so maybe?
Again, thank you for your kindness

You are beautiful! Since you are a Registered Nutritionist/Dietician what are your thoughts on this surgery reversing my diabetes or at least bringing my A1C down to normal range without daily fight! Of course I want great weight-loss too. ( I posted this message before but I think I put it I the wrong spot )

You are so kind to send me well wishes. Thank you so much. I've been lurking around for months and you are actually my very first post lol!! It does look like we have a lot in common though. I've had a couple of bumps myself getting through the process and my surgery is now likely in December. It seems like I've been waiting forever. But as they say, 'Anything worth having is with working (or waiting!) for'. And it's actually been good for me. I've learned an awful lot about myself. My last pre-op appointment is December 6, so likely 2-3 weeks after that. Hopefully my date will be finalized soon.
  4. Hey Shelby - no I have not had my surgery yet - I actually had a bit of a bump in the road with getting the paperwork requested by my bariatric center's staff, but I think they have things straightened out now. I have a final pre-surgery appt with my surgeon on 11/27 (required by my insurance) and then everything will be submitted. Still hoping for a date before the end of the year but it could be January. I went with what they told me in class for vitamins - they gave us lots of options but mentioned that if we bought Celebrate brand of the multi-complex (chewable), and then a calcium that they make - took each 2 times per day then we would get all we need. I think I may add a B12 just for good measure although it is in the multi-complex. It cost me around 40 dollars on Amazon for everything - and the calcium will be enough for a month and a half. Overall a bit cheaper than trying to get everything covered with different vitamins at a walmart or discount pharmacy. There is also bariactric advantage but they are more expensive. I can deal with the taste of the Celebrate just fine and have already started taking them. IF you choose to parcel together different brands of vitamins, just be sure to get calcium citrate rather than calcium carbonate because it is much better absorbed. And take the calcium 2 hours apart from your multi that contains iron or your iron if you get an iron only supplement because they will compete with each other for absorption.

Yes, the Celebrate vitamins have the most of all the things you need. I actually used a magnifying glass and made a spread sheet to figure it all out. My PCP said that even us older/post-menopause gals (I'm speaking for myself) need extra iron after surgery and also anyone of Northern European descent needs to watch their B-12 levels carefully bc with our teeny little tummies we won't absorb enough. My surgery is in 8 days and I'm trying to distract myself by doing research and getting everything ready for Thanksgiving. Nervous, too, but ready for my new chapter.

Thank you so much! Nerves are a little wonky right now but I'm just ready to get it over with!
  10. Hey - was going to tell you - I went to my preop class last night, and my program encourages Celebrate Bariatric vitamins which you can get at Amazon - the megamix multi chew I think it is called has all of the Bs and iron as well! And then the calcium chews 2 times per day. That seemed easiest for me, 1 pill in the morning and then 2 chews of calcium per day, so I ordered them. I think it was 40 dollars. Seems like a lot except when I spent time researching individual ones, it would cost more. And it is just another bill I will have to incorporate - less money on food and more on vitamins haha.

Thanks for the information on the vitamins. I have to get on that today and start taking them!

    Thank you simply,
It’s going very well. Days 3 and 4 were horrible with the nausea. I felt like I had the flu. But that’s all past me and I feel great! I’ve lost about 15lbs since surgery - 9 days ago. This Friday I meet with my surgeon for my first post op appointment. I need to get my official surgery weight from them so I can really get a true picture of my weight loss. The hard part now is figuring what my needs are for vitamins. It’s so confusing. I’m hoping to get that clarified. Have you had surgery?

Waves of disappointment

by simplyseahorse on 01-09-2018 at 12:13 PM
HaHa I just looked back at my last blog post about how things were about to start happening to me now! That was in November. That was right before things stopped happening as far as progress in my bariatric services office. If I can offer one little morsel of advice above all others - DO NOT rely on anyone to verify your insurance, make appointments, follow up on labs - NOTHING! Give yourself a time limit - wait 3 days, then call yourself. I would be a month into recovery if I had done this

Swimming, Swimming

by simplyseahorse on 11-06-2017 at 11:48 AM
Getting closer - now it is just down to these final details of getting stuff turned in. I have had the tests, gotten the clearances, but have to wait on the final approval and then I will get my surgery date. Funny, I had planned to go on a cruise for Christmas, but then I heard that our insurance at work was changing, so I went into high gear to get my surgery before the end of the year, and I am not even upset about missing the cruise. I am much more excited about getting started on this journey

A Seahorse's Journey with the Sleeve

by simplyseahorse on 10-09-2017 at 12:37 PM
So...I have decided to do this thing. It took about a year to decide, and now that I am over 100 lb above my adjusted body weight, it'is about time!

I have decided to be a seahorse on my journey, floating through the sometimes scary waters....because it is better than being what I actually am... a fat dietitian. I have actually had patients tell me that I need to lead by example. Boy will I be happy when some of those same patients can see a difference in my weight!
