Biography:
I have struggled with my weight most of my life. Even though I was athletic and played lots of sports in my youth I was chubby for all but a few years. As a result of being pretty active it was never hard for me to lose weight if I put some effort into it. In the early 1990's I dropped about 65 lbs and was down to about 210. Two, three years later I was well over 300. In the late 1990's I dropped about 100 lbs and got down to 208. I was running 5 and 10K's and ran a half marathon in just over 2hrs. In my 20's and 30's I could lose weight just by quitting drinking beer. Dieting would really increase the losses. Well, around 2002 I badly injured my ribs in a snowboarding accident. It prevented me from doing anything athletic for weeks, consequently I got lazy and stopped exercisng. Within 5 years I was back over 300 lbs. In 2007 I started my own company that allowed me to work from home. Now I didn't even walk regularly and as my business flourished the pounds kept packing on. My sister who is a Dr suggested I consider lap band surgery in around 2010. I was stubborn, thinking I could drop weight like before. Well, the mid forties aren't like the early thirties. It was very hard for me to diet and exercise and I kept gaining weight until 2013. At around 400lbs I seemed to level off, but made no progress losing weight. One day in April 2014 I woke up with a thought that just changed my whole outlook. Four words that just kept repeating in my mind that morning that made me focus on what needed to be done. The velvet glove doesn't do much to motivate me. I'm much more of a boot in the ass type of guy. For whatever reason these four words were planted in my brain that morning and those words were: "Stay fat, die young" I don't know if I heard that phrase before or if my brain came up with it by itself, but that day I did some research about bariatric surgery and made an appointment with the NY Bariatric group.
Being fat never really limited my life very much until recently, but enough was enough. For the last few years when I went to a restaurant and looked at a menu I would say "OK". When I went jogging I left potholes. If I went out to a bar I couldn't wear green because people thought I was a pool table. I couldn't dress in drag and wear high heels because I struck oil. (all these jokes were stolen from Rodney Dangerfield)
No longer. I will be thin again. I have a great life, great family, great job and much too much to live for. Four cold, blunt words changed my life.

2015 What a Year! Resolutions for 2016

by VSGSetyoufree on 01-12-2016 at 03:35 PM
It has been a year of change for me with renewed optimism and a new outlook on life. My weight at the beginning of 2015 was around 285 and on 12/30/15 it was 187. As it has been said plenty of times before my only regret is that I didn't do this sooner. I was coasting through life for 5 or 6 years and not really living. Being fat hindered everything I used to do and was like self inflicted prison. Nothing can replace the feeling of being able to do anything I want physically. Recently my friend's

Goal Weight Met Today

by VSGSetyoufree on 12-08-2015 at 11:44 PM
I have not seen my surgeon for a few months. Mainly I felt like it wasn't necessary to make an appointment to just weigh in and chat for a while. I have done everything I was supposed to do and it has paid off. I was due for a full blood panel so I saw my surgeon today and also weighed in. The printout from the scale read 187.5 In April 2014, the first time I got on that scale it read 400.5
I honestly didn't think I could get to that number without some kind of plastic surgery or liposuction

Turkey Trot Goal met and a pound away from the Promised Land

by VSGSetyoufree on 11-30-2015 at 10:43 PM
Well after spending the better part of 2 decades sitting on the sidelines I have to say it's better to be in the game. I weighed in today at 189, down 3 pounds from 2 weeks ago, a pound from my goal weight and down over 210 pounds from the day I started this process. Last week I ran a 5K and my goal was to break 30 min. I came in at 29:21, nearly a minute faster than the 5K I ran a month ago. This was a hilly and challenging course and it was cold, but It was a great race and a fun time.

The pace continues, Down 2 more pounds to 192

by VSGSetyoufree on 11-18-2015 at 08:43 AM
It's been a regular pound-a-week process for me recently which is a lot slower than my early losses of course, but a loss is a loss. Only 4 pounds away from a number I never really thought would happen. I set my goal weight at a number when I was in the best shape of my life. That was when I was 17 yrs old in high school. To be honest I thought that possibly getting under 200 lbs would have been more than enough, but my new active lifestyle has made me want to achieve more. If you don't use

Congrats to the Royals, Down 2 more pounds

by VSGSetyoufree on 11-03-2015 at 10:05 PM
The Royals were a team of destiny. After getting so close last year they would not be denied this year. They just refused to lose. They deserved it.
It seems I'm on a 1lb/week pace. As long as I remain disciplined with my eating and exercise regularly I know I'll hit my target weight soon. Only 6 more pounds to go. Took two huge bins of clothes to a thrift shop this week. My closet was loaded with stuff that was too big. Continued success to all.
