Hi, Browsing through this website found your comments regarding Dr. Carlton at Nicholson clinic. Nicholson actually did my surgery, but Carleton is the one that I see for follow ups and I've been extrememly frustrated with the whole process as well. You're right, 5 minutes of their time, questions not answered and they seem way to busy for us "post-op" because I almost feel they've gotten their "money" and need to move on to next potentional paying customer. Since day 1, I have told them I can eat more than they said I should be able to, I have expressed this at EVERY visit and several phone calls in between. All ignored. I am 10 months out, lost 40 pounds, gained 10 back and eat a normal meal. I can't get any help from them and the last time I was in there in Feb, he was so rude and mean to me I don't want to go back. Feel very lost right now.

    Hello. Thanks for the add.

Thanks for checking on me. Got home yesterday afternoon and I'm doing pretty good. Not much pain or nausea. Sipping water and protein shakes. Resting too.

    Hope you are doing well.

Hope your surgery goes well. I did see that True Results created a special bariatric outpatient surgery center with Baylor Surgicare - Richardson.

Let me know how things went when you get settled in at home.

So sorry to hear that your experience has been this way. I have notified Dr. Carlton about some of the frustrations that I experienced with the Nicholson Clinic staff. And I agree that the booklet is outdated. I will be giving Dr. Carlton specific feedback about the booklet too.

I'm not going through Tru Results so I don't know their policies. If you haven't seen a dietician, you really should. That helped me understand the Pre-Op and Post-Op diet.

Also purchased Dr. Nicholson's book titled "Weight Loss Surgery: The Real Skinny" available on Amazon.
  7. As far as questions about the surgery, I am still not sure. It seems like everyone has a different experience. I don't quite understand the medication. I just got a phone call from a pharmacy in McAllen that said they were mailing me a bunch of medication and they would bill me for it. I have read through the blue folder three times. So you can't drink shakes after surgery because it is too think, right? It'll probably have to be a powder protein? I had to call the clinic because the packet is outdated. It stated it would be a 1-2 night hospital stay. I called to see what hospital and they told me it was an outpatient procedure at TruResults/Baylor Richardson. I tried to see what portion the insurance covered, and they referred me to TruResults. It has just been a frustrating process. I feel like without the proper information and tools, that it's setting me up to fail.
  8. I told his nursing staff at that point that I was extremely disappointed. That I had met the guy twice, and each time he was always backing out of a room like he had someplace better to be. Of the three people on staff, I was ignored by two, and the third was the only one that responded to me. She said most questions would be answered by the folder and if I wanted she would "drag" (her words, not mine) Dr. Carlton back in so that he could answer more questions. Then she told me about the bariatric seminar they have tomorrow and told me I could go there to get more questions answered.

The experience left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm sure he is a good surgeon, but he left me with the impression that I was just a number. One more surgery he had that week. I am pretty sure the guy is competent. You can't do 20 surgeries a week and not know what you're doing (I would hope). But he made it very clear, that as a person or a patient, he couldn't care less. That it was a volume business and I was on the conveyor belt.

I don't have much experience with surgeons, but I have been told that they aren't the most personable of individuals. But to ignore me, not once, but twice and then thrust this waiver into my hands to sign telling me of the risks of surgery seemed excessive. It was just little things like that. Things like using little pet names so he wouldn't have to bother learning or remembering my name.
  9. I have met Dr. Carlton twice. The first time was after he performed my EGD. He stopped by while I was in recovery and asked if we had any questions. When we started to ask questions, he said he had other procedures to get to and that any questions I had could be answered at the follow up visit at the Nicholson clinic. He didn't tell me anything at that point, including whether or I not a had the hernia and acid reflux the test was designed for. Luckily, the nurse at TruResults let me know that I did, in fact, have the hernia and acid reflux.

So I scheduled my appointment at the Nicholson Clinic, ready at that point for everything to be explained to me. Dr. Carlton came in and talked for 5 mins, max. He told me there would be 5 incisions and a 40 min procedure and that he does 15-20 of them each week. He said my stomach would be the circumference of a banana and that was that. He asked if I had any questions. I explained that he hadn't explained enough about the process for me to know if I had any questions. Then he had the nurse give me the blue folder and went into his office.

Please let me know what questions or concerns that you have about your surgery or the way things have been handled. I will personally pass this information on the Dr. Carlton. He is a dedicated surgeon but I know that the actions of clinic staff or Tru Results staff can cause concerns.

When I was going through the insurance approval process, I was frustrated about the responses I received from the clinic staff. Dr. Carlton appreciated me sharing that information with him. If we don't tell him, he can't fix things.

Good luck on your surgery - Bonnie

The Dreaded Week Three

by drwatsonjd on 06-04-2014 at 10:43 PM
So I have officially turned the corner and have completed two full weeks of liquids. I have only one more week until soft foods, but first I have to complete the dreaded week three.

But first, let me get something out of the way. Yep. The dreaded s-word. Stall. Haven't lost any weight in the last few days. However, I am happy to report that on a scale of "slightly bummed" to "oh-sweet-baby-jesus-is-that-the-four-horsemen-to-carry-me-off-because-it-is-the-end-of-the-world-what-did-I-do-to-myself,"

Adventures in Week Two

by drwatsonjd on 06-01-2014 at 01:43 AM
The pain is pretty much gone. Every so often I will twist in an awkward manner and it may be a problem. Otherwise, I'm good. I'm sitting upright for extended periods of time without a problem.

I have been slacking on my protein this week because well... I'm tired of these damn shakes. I thought I could do it, but I hit some kind of psychological wall this week where the fact that I couldn't actually chew food made me angry. No seriously, I felt an overwhelming sense of resentment

Observations after 1 week post-op

by drwatsonjd on 05-28-2014 at 08:22 PM
I feel like I am at about 75%. Most of the pain has subsided, but there is still this nagging discomfort in the lower left side of my stomach. I called the doctor and they said it was normal. Sometimes it takes longer for people to heal. We scheduled a 2 week follow up and said if it was still bothering me at that point, we would discuss it.

I am surprised at how much I am not hungry. I still have cravings though. Lately it has been a Chipotle Chicken Burrito Bowl. Don't ask

My annoying alarm clock

by drwatsonjd on 05-26-2014 at 01:55 PM
I am one week post op. The first 3-4 nights I couldn't sleep due to pain in my lower abdomen. The next two nights, gas woke up in the middle of the night. This morning acid reflux woke me up before my alarm clock. Why is there gas and acid reflux if I am not eating anything? This is getting a bit annoying and disruptive. Can anyone tell m when things will normal out?

Listening to my body - a new experience

by drwatsonjd on 05-25-2014 at 10:32 PM
So I am 6 days out and still on liquids. I was doing ok with liquids and the routine of it all and all of a sudden around 6pm today I felt if I saw another protein shake or can of broth I would lose my mind.

So I decided to get iced tea. The diet said I am allowed 16oz a day and since I can't have soda anymore, I am a tea girl. So I run out an get some iced tea and enjoy my 16 oz. Then there is his reaction inside me, that I guess was acid reflux. It was very pronounced. More than
