  1. My message was too long for one post, I guess. I get wordy sometimes. Here is the rest...

If all is well with your medical clearance and blood work, you'll schedule your surgery date at that second consult. They are usually scheduling at least a month out, but you can ask to be put on the list for an earlier date. If they have a cancellation, you might get bumped up. Mine was scheduled for Feb 18, but I got bumped up to Jan 28. A week before surgery, you will start a liquid diet (jello, broth, shakes, etc). The day before surgery you will be on clear liquids only.

You'll be in the hospital for three days including the surgery day. That morning will be kind of scary with all the blood draws, questions, etc. Just try to relax and know that a lot of people have been through it and that you are in good hands. My best advice for after surgery is get up and walk. Walk as much as you can. You are going to be full of gas, because they blow you up with it for the surgery. It is going to be uncomfortable and float around in side you, but the more you walk the faster you work it through your system.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. Good luck!
  2. Hi! Congrats on starting your journey. I have had a great experience with Henry Ford. They are very helpful, always willing to answer questions, and clearly explain what you need to do. I assume you have already done the day long Orientation session. At your surgical consult, you'll be given an amount of weight to lose before surgery. It's usually 5-10% of your body weight. You will also meet with Wanda to schedule a few other appointments: Psychologist, diet and exercise class, dietitian. Over the next few months you will work on losing your required weight while you go through these various appointments. There should be a checklist in your Blue Binder.

Once you have met the pre-surgery weight loss goal and been to all of your appointments, you'll contact Wanda and tell her you are ready for your second consult. You'll make that appointment and she'll schedule you for your medical clearance appointment. For the Medical clearance, you will meet with one of their doctors who will basically give you a check-up to make sure you are healthy enough for surgery. You may also have to have a sleep study done if they order that (unless you already have a CPAP). You'll have to have blood work done a week before your second consult, the order for that should be in your Blue Binder as well.

About MasonMarv
Sleeved or not sleeved:
I have had a gastric sleeve.
Biography:
I am a husband, writer, Freemason, and pet-taker-care-of-er. I perform stand-up comedy when ever possible and have written and performed in several stage shows. My wife and I have two dogs and a cat who are our children right now, though we do hope to adopt an actual child soon.

I have struggled with my weight since I was a kid, trying many diets and weight loss programs. I did well on several of them, but would eventually gain the weight back and then some. I decided to have weight loss surgery in August 2012 and finally had a sleeve gastrectomy on January 28, 2013. I am very excited about the journey ahead and I look forward to being a healthier me.
