protein shakes

I am just beginning my initial apt for getting the sleeve. I have to go threw 6 months of seeing different specialist from a dietician to psych dr also diet and exercise program. I'm sure that's the norm or so it seems from all the research I've been doing. I have noticed a lot of talk about protein and pre op diets. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to start incorporating protein shakes/drinks into my diet now or is it really not necessary until closer to my surgery date? Aug will be my second month visit and that's when I see my dietician. I surprised at how fast the last month has gone by!

I would say wait until a month before surgery, then shop around and taste different shakes/see what you like. I have 1 more dr visit which is next month then I will be ready for a surgery date. I met with my dietician and we talked about protein shakes. I bought EAS Adavantedge protein shakes. They have 17g protein, 0 sugar, 2.5g carb,100 calories. its pretty good. I try to drink 1 daily just to get use to drinking shakes. They are at Walmart $4.97 for a pkg of 4 shakes.

Thank u...I'll have to check them out...I used to drink the muscle milk..they are kind of expensive but they r pretty good and they have a lot of protein in them but the calories are like 240 or 300. So probably not the best choice but they r good lol.

Have you tried any protein drinks? I think pretty much all of them are gross, especially the most nurtitious ones that contain the whey protein, which is most easily absorbed by your body. I only used them when it was absolutely positively necessary due to the surgery diet. Some people manage to find some they like. If you liked the muscle milk (which is not whey protein if I am remembering correctly), you may have better luck.

As far as your six month experience, it is very common for those going through insurance to do what you're doing. It's not usually the surgeon requiring it all. It's the insurance company. When no insurance company is involved as it was for me, they still require the psych consult, but the diet and exercise is not required.

Most of the ones I've tried are nasty but the muscle milks are pretty good. At least to me anyway. I've also tried the ones special k has. They aren't to bad but they leave a chalky taste in my mouth.
I had to have an ekg and a breathing test the other day. And I have to have an endoscopy done. I'm not looking forward to that at all lol. I've read a lot on here about the psych eval and I'm not sure what to think. Mine is scheduled for Nov 6th.

I know the best one! I did TONS of research and I HATE HATE HATE the taste of protein shakes! Finally I found one that was the highest protein to calorie ratio. I even used some to mix into different puddings and my fiance almost ate them all! lol He didn't even know there was protein powder in them.

I've never tried any flavor other than the chocolate peanut butter, but it's 'whey' good. (haha..sorry I can't help myself from a ridiculous pun)

Anywho... I'm always excited to tell people about it because I was DREADING having to do the protein shakes.. and I still have these today just because they're good (and I need the protein..)

Also, another trick is 'Interval Trainier' it's an app you can get for free. In the beginning...when you're just trying to get as much protein and liquid in your pouch as you can it's very helpful because you can set it to beep every minute or two minutes. This way you can drink every beep...and it gives your pouch time to adjust. It was a LIFE SAVER!
