    Hi guys!

I have my surgery scheduled for May 31st with Dr. Alvarez! I am SOOO excited! One question I have is in regards to additional medical tourism insurance. What did everyone do? Did you choose to purchase? Why or why not?

    Thanks!!!!

I looked into this insurance extensively and I did not end up purchasing it. The problem is they say that you get 50,000 dollars of coverage but really only 5000 dollars of that is for complications. The rest is for things that you would never even use like loss of reproductive abilities and things like that. We all know that $5000 doesn't go very far in the United States. I spoke with the guy at the one company and he said that I could request a personalized quote for insurance for complications. I did that and it came back out around $1000 for 30,000 dollars worth of complication insurance along with all of the other things they offered in the original policy. If you would like more information on the company I spoke with, please message me privately Thanks.

I got the complication insurance through Global. I bought a $100,000 policy for the $10,000 complication insurance. When I got an infection show up as soon as I got home, it was a relief to have some coverage in case I needed it. It doesn't go far in the US, but I never had to go to an ER so it would have covered all the doctors office visits plus being referred to an Infectious Disease specialist. My insurance never denied the treatment (at least not yet, knock on wood) but I can't imagine the stress of having to wonder if I'd have thousands of dollars of bills to pay - on top of what I'd already paid for the surgery. To me it was worth the $600 or so it cost not to have that stress.

Plus, morbid thought but they also cover retpatriation if things went tragically wrong in Mexico. It's a surgery with general anesthesia so anything is possible, especially when you consider the extra weight we carry that necessitates the surgery & if you have comorbidities (as I did). If a medical tourist were to die in Mexico, it would cost their family thousands of dollars to bring them back across the border & be a red tape nightmare. The insurance company covers it & would facilitate.
