My name is Pam, I am also an RN. I am sure I will be the one posting on here for Roland and reading some of the posts and comments to him. We just submitted all the health information for my husband to have either the Sleeve or Lap Band. Roland is on Pradexa 150mg Bid and Asa 81mg qd for Afib/flutter. He had an Ablation in June. He has been in Sinus Rhythm for the past 3 weeks. I know his Cardiologist will let him stop the Asa and Pradexa for a week to have this done, but I am just a little worried about him getting a sleeve although this would be the best surgery to have under normal circumstances. I have only worked MS/Tele, ER and occl float to ICU and I have never heard of the sleeve until today. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I initially went to my surgery planning on the lap band, I had been trying to get bariatric surgery for 10 years and that was the one I preferred over the bypass. I first learned about the sleeve at my consult. After doing some more research I discovered that the band has up to a 50 percent reoperation rate due to complications, malfunctions of the band or erosion into the stomach. In contrast the bypass has a 3 percent, and the sleeve has a 1.5 percent reoperation rate. That plus the fact that people lose more of their excess weight with the sleeve were the two main deciding factors for me.
If your husband has a complicated medical history, I strongly recommend a surgeon who works with a Bariatric Center of Excellence. They will have worked with those kind of complications before and have a specific protocol as far as the meds and the surgery.

    Hi Pam & Roland!

Fellow nurse here, with a complicated health history. 3.5 years ago I had open heart surgery (at 42) to replace my Aortic valve and repair my Mitral valve, as well as have my spleen removed 10 days prior. I could not tolerate Coumadin, so since have only been on a single ECASA daily. Had to be off the ASA for a week prior and a week post-op. I had sleeve surgery Oct 19, 2013 and have lost a total of 47 lbs. so far. No regrets at all. No difficulties resuming the ASA, and no stomach sensitivities either.

It's a laparoscopic surgery, quite safe as far as surgeries are concerned, recovery was easy and really non-eventful. Only difficult times I have had is finding my 'getting full' point. I have no hunger, so have struggled a bit with recognizing signs of satiety, as I am already satisfied before I start eating! Not complaining at all, but if I eat 1/2 a bite too much before recognizing it, back up it comes.

Best wishes to you and Roland in his process!

I too had open heart surgery 3 yrs ago and went into CHF and im on blood thinner as well im on ASA 81mg and Plavix 75/ MY surgeron said he wanted me to stop a week prior to surgery. I was originally going to go for the band and that was what my heart failure specialist recommended until My surgeon told me the band has a high failure rate. So he recommended the sleeve for me since if you are a heart patient they don't want you under anesthesia for very long. Im a former hospital pharmacy technician that used to work in a cardiac hospital. Im having my surgery done on feb 26 2014. I had several cardiac tests to make sure my heart will be ok and that im healthy cardiac wise. In fact my cardiologist is the one that referred me for surgery. Its been a battle as I had to repeat the process due to I lost my insurance coverage in 2012 and my spouses insurance didn't cover weight loss surgery at the time. This go round has had its ups and down especially with my spouses insurance requiring such a high bmi and they require a bmi of 50.
