Insulin Use After Gastric Sleeve

I am curious to know how Type 1 Diabetics' insulin needs were impacted by the gastric sleeve and subsequent diet. Personally, I am on an insulin pump and was diagnosed with Type 1 at the age of 26. I am now 55 yrs old. I will be honest, I am afraid of having lots of lows after this surgery. Does anyone have experience with this?

Well I'm a Type 1 Pumper and I'm 18 days post-op and my insulin requirement has decreased dramatically. Prior to surgery my Basal Rate was 0.850 (u500) and my Ratio was 1:9 post surgery my Basal Rate is 0.300 (u500) and my Ratio is 1:15. I've had no lows at all. You just need to keep a close eye on it when you're on your pre-surgery diet because requirements will change. I know that my surgeon was not accustomed to doing this procedure on Type 1's and there were a few times when I was super glad I had my Endocrine Dr. on call and he came and saw me everyday I was in the hospital. I would suggest you have a real discussion with your surgeon if he knows how to treat a Type 1 during the surgery and post op because you will have to take your pump off and they will have to accommodate for that. If you have any other questions please let me know.

I'm looking forward to using less insulin. I'm on a pump and continuous monitor. My endocrinologist is very supportive of this surgery, as are all my specialists. I still need to see my shrink, and the cardiologist wants to do a stress test a month before the actual surgery. Thanks for the tip on having the endo on call. Good idea. Hope all is well with you and yours. How will you handle Thanksgiving with your sleeve? Have a plan?

I have my sleeve surgery on 23 April and I too am type 1 diabetic on an insulin pump. I was very interested to read how insulin levels change post surgery. I too am nervous about having too many hypos following surgery and not being able to eat to bring the blood sugar up due to being on a liquid diet post op. I would appreciate any other advice for dealing with post op diabetes stuff. M x

I have been a diabetic for almost 10 years. I am on the Omnipod pump and have the Dexicom Blood glucose monitor as well. I am considered Type 1 but have other features of a Type 2. The amount of Insulin I take on a daily basis (b/t 60-70 units a day) will never allow me to lose weight regardless of the diet. Diabetic Type 1's have told me this amount of insulin would kill them. This sleeve surgery will eliminate my high blood pressure, chloresterol and anxiety medications as well as the CPAP machine. My endocrinologist is concerned about the Hypos...how has everything worked out with all of you on this post? I look forward to a different life, with limited insulin and less medication. I do exercise by either running 3 miles or using the elliptical machine every day. I average burning between 400- 575 calories a day. Any thoughts from this group would be appreciated.

Well, I am now 4 months post op and my insulin requirements have dropped from 100units per day to 30units per day. I do have a lot of hypos so I think my insulin sensitivity factor needs adjusting on my pump as well as my carb ratio. It's good not having to need as much insulin and the weight loss certainly helps with insulin resistance.

Thanks for sharing...please keep me/us posted on your progress. My surgery will likely be in January due to insurance requirements with Tufts etc.

I received my surgery date yesterday. OCTOBER 22nd!!! My doc is putting me on a 1200 calorie diet for two weeks prior to, then three days of full fluids before the 22nd. She said she wants me to exercise and build up my strength since I have some heart issues. Wish me luck you guys. Geordie lass, that news about your insulin usage is very motivating. Thanks for sharing that. Glad we all found one another.
