Protein Protocall

It would seem there is a general consensus among VSG'ers that the daily consumption of protein supplements can be, to say the least, trying.

When I first left the hospital, I had no problem with drinking my daily protein shakes, however, as time moved on, I found that I grew increasingly less fond of the chalky aftertaste and the watered down consistency. It became such a problem that I would try to rely on edible proteins alone (something I do not recommend when you are newly post-op. You are unable to consume 60 g of protein per day relying on this alone).

After some thought regarding this matter, I decided to change things up and re-introduce the shake into my daily diet. I began by adding 8 oz of skim milk to my 50 g of protein powder (two leveled-off scoops) first thing in the morning. This seems to have worked well as I am able to successfully drink the full shake in one sitting, and in the process, I am satisfying a large portion of my daily protein consumption.

This is not to say that this will work for everyone. I know many are faced with lactose intolerance, so milk is out of the question, while others are too soon post-op to consume 8 oz of 50 g of protein in one sitting. This is merely a suggestion based on what I have found works for me. If I can share it with others in the hope that it may help, then that makes all of the difference.

Take what you want, and leave the rest.

BTW, I use Fairlife milk which has 15g of protein/cup and is also lactose free. It's a great way to boost the protein content of shakes.

Try the core power vanilla from fairlife. They taste very good. A little more sugar than I would prefer.

I might try some milk again. So handy to get 15g protein a cup. I've not tolerated it well before but will try some lactose free ones again perhaps. Sounds like that works well for you Shannon and helps get a good amount in at once :-)

Hello Dale and Captain Ron! Thank you for the information regarding Fairlife. Previous to you mentioning it, I have not heard of this product, but it certainly sounds like something worth looking into.

Hi Edie! The extra protein has its advantages (if you can tolerate it). By my calculations, I use two scoops of protein powder (50 g in total) and 8 oz of milk (8 g in total). In that one shake alone, I am ensuring that I meet the majority of my daily protein requirements.

Almond milk is also good and the low sugar variety tastes great. Continued success!

    Thanks jerzeygirl!

To be honest, I have tried almond milk, and I don't particularly care for it (it's just a personal preference).

They sell at Walmart but it's hit and miss if in stock so easier to buy online and have delivered - living in AJ (AKA the boonies) it's just easier and I'm lazy

and https://www.vitaminshoppe.com/p/labr...drinks/yc-1009 (more flavors then the choc ice cream)

Thank you for the information, Sue. I greatly appreciate it. I am always on the look out for a protein product that has flavor without the chalkiness and watered down components.

Yes Shannon. If you have not tried Fa!rlife you should. I love it. Has more protein as well as being lactose free. My daughter even loves it. As for protein intake, it does get easier with time. The beginning was very hard for me to get in all my protein and fluids in. With time, it got a lot better.
