Making Changes When Necessary

Rate this Entry
I'm almost four years out for surgery, but I still find it necessary and important to change things up. I haven't been feeling 100% these past few months and I finally decided to do something about it. I'm sharing my story at my blog at:

What changes have you been making since you've had surgery?

Best wishes,
Jen

    Interesting post!
I'm wondering why your previous doctor was not worried about low iron. It's one of the first thing they should test!
How was your D vitamin level? I'm deficient in both and have a hard time improving my numbers even with huge dosage of supplements. We don't really know why, one issue with absorption could have been the PPI (I stopped it completely two weeks ago) or my IBS issue. Next blood test will tell if it was the PPI...
My doc (in France) was actually against infusion because of my multiple allergies. But he was horrified when he saw my numbers in June. He said it was the lowest he ever saw in his career...and he is not a Spring chicken! My results did improve a little since June but I'm still too low and sometimes feel really exhausted. Also I can feel when my iron goes down because I'm starving and start to have cravings..

Did you have a skin test for the food sensitivity? a few years ago my specialist (allergy specialist) had me tested, they used skin tests, it was positive to everything they tested.
I was told that kind of test is not always reliable so after that they did blood cultures. At that stage may be only 70% remained positive. It was still really high but better than the skin test. For example on skin I was positive to peanut, when I was not in the blood culture.
And I have issues with tomatoes but it didn't show on the skin test...
So may be in your case double checking could help to get a more precised target of what to stop in your diet.
I would be upset about the coffee too, and I don't even drink coffee everyday anymore!

Great blog Jen! And I love the picture! You always have such a great smile in your pics! Fingers crossed you can get your iron up. My sister had issues with iron and had to have the infusions to get it up. She is doing fine now, 5 years post op. Gah! I don't think I could give up my coffee. I drink my venti nonfat latte every morning. It may take me 2 hours but it is my happy time. LOL. Hope you get it all sorted out so you can feel more like you again. I agree about the running. I love it. I find it very therapeutic. I do a lot of thinking things through when I run. What exactly does a running trainer do with you? I am curious as I have never heard of that. Do you go running together outside or do they do it on a treadmill?

Thanks for replying! My Vitamin D was low the first year after surgery and I've been on large doses of it weekly every since. My levels are good now, so here's hoping my iron levels will be back on track soon, too!

They did a blood test for the food sensitivity. I'm curious to see how my elimination diet goes. I'm not sure if I can rule coffee out of my life completely!

    Take care!

Thanks, Christie! Glad to hear about your sister!

I'm not sure I'm ready to give up coffee completely. I gave up Diet Coke years ago and don't miss it, but it's different with coffee.

I've only had one session with my running trainer and we just need some tests, measurements and some exercises. We're going to worth on strength training, my form and working on getting my endurance up. I think I'll be doing sprints with her, so I think I'll do longer runs on my own in-between our sessions. I'l let you know what we do!

There's a direct connection between our smaller stomach and absorption of D vitamin because we have less stomac acid to absorb it. But in my case, since I have reflux, it's actually not an issue with acidity and my doctors are puzzled. I did have deficiencies in the past, before surgery, but never to that extend. I take 10 000ui per day plus 200 000ui every two weeks. So they don't want me to take more because I could develop a bad reaction. I'm supposed to get a complete health check up soon but it requires two days so it will have to wait.

I'm glad they used the blood test right directly. At least it's more reliable! Please let us know how you do with the diet. I hope you will feel better!

Nutrition has such an impact on our health, I wish more doctors could realize it!
    Take care!

My nutritionist was horrified when I told her that after 3 years out I didn't think I needed the bariatric vitamins anymore and had been taking the Walmart brand multivitamin for a year or so. She said they didn't have any iron. She was right! Back to bariatric ones for me.
