13 months : Patellar tendonitis

Rate this Entry
So I had my appointment yesterday with the ortho specialist.
The professor clearly knows his business because just after examination and questioning, even before the X-rays he already knew what was wrong.

Good news: I don't need surgery, bad news is that I've been in pain for already 8 months with my left knee, now it's both knees and very painful and it could take a while to get better.
Sunday I walked 6 kms and Monday I was in excruciating pain during the night.

Yesterday I was told to avoid stairs, too much walking (too much? how can I know, usually it's already too late when I know..) standing and no jumping or going down a hill. It's actually called a jumper knee.. There's not much to do besides taking an anti inflammatory treatment (which I can't have) so I have a very strong cream instead and we will try PRP injections in a few weeks. It's apparently one of the best way to repair the ligaments (they will take my own blood, centrifuge it and get an injection in my knee of my own plasma). Modern technique but that does sound fancy!

I was supposed to fly next week, canceling flights, car and appointments right now...Happy 13 to me! At least I'm not in a cast (yet)!

I know we're not supposed to take the anti inflammatory medications, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. I'm in your boat only mine is my shoulder. I've been on 15 mg daily of Mobic since April. Not had any problems with it. The pain is still terrible, but it is absolutely unbearable without it. The steroid shots, steroids packs, physical therapy, pain medication, nothing is helping!

Are you using Australia Dream Cream? I'm using that. It's pretty good stuff. It helps with my tendinitis and arthritis. I hope you find some relief soon. And maybe you'd be ok to try Mobic like me. It really helps.

I'm sorry to hear you are still having problems with your shoulder. All those ligament issues are so painful! May be you could try the PRP injections? apparently they try those when nothing work for several months. I was also reading about shock wave therapy or ultra sounds...I will look into it too, but my specialist did say that since I'm in pain for so long, PRP would be the best option.

Since I stopped my PPI ten days ago, my stomach is really sensitive and NSAIDs are out of questions. I had to stop my PPI for good because docs think my deficiencies could be linked to the PPI absorbing my supplements instead of me. So I only took some acetaminophen when the pain was at it's pick. Indeed it's not enough.

The cream prescribed yesterday is called Focus gel 10mg, the main ingredient is Piroxicam, it's a local anti-inflammatory and analgesic. It's really strong and I almost felt like drunk. But it was really great to reduce the pain last night, I could almost sleep all night.

Hmm, I wonder what effect my ppi is having on me. I've been taking 40mg of prescription Protonix daily since my surgery over two years ago. I still have awful reflux and heartburn even with it. When I asked my doctor about my vitamin levels when he did bloodwork, he said he didn't check those. Gah! What was even the point? He knows I'm a WLS patient and that I'm underweight. I'd think it would be kind of important to know if I'm getting enough nutrition. I guess it wasn't important to him.

I get ultrasound ther apt and some other therapy where they attach a machine to me (drawing a mental blank on what's it's called right now). Neither of those help at all. They actually make it hurt worse. I'm really at a loss on what to do. My neurologist has suggested dry needling. I suppose I'll try to find someone that does that.

There's a few medications that we shouldn't take post-op or really for a short time if there's no other choice. NSAID's is a big no no, but actually the one that Katrina is taking is better than Ibuprofen. When I had to take corticoids in June, I had to take a higher dosage for my PPI to protect my sleeve because those corticoids did take a toll on my stomach from day 1.

Two years is a long time to take a PPI. But your reflux could be also coming from the enormous stress you've been under for those past two years. I did notice than when stressed or in pain my reflux get worse.
Your doctor should prescribe you an other blood test to check vitamin D and calcium (for bones/ligaments issues) B12, iron but also magnesium (because of your stress level). Many doctors have no clues of the link between nutrition/vitamin deficiencies and sickness. It's a shame but I saw it many times. If your doctor is not compliant just go to an other one.
Because I've been taking several university classes in nutrition the past five years, and started a full course program recently, I discovered so many links between my health issues and nutrition it's just amazing. I had to insist during my last post-op to have my D vitamin checked because here in Asia people are almost never deficient. I did explain to my surgeon that being a westerner my metabolism is different and did show him my results from June (my doc in France prescribed those) because I did emailed him at the time but apparently got lost. Indeed last month I was deficient again but it did improve a little since June. The nutritionist is trying to find infos for my specific case..they are puzzled with my strange results.

For the ligaments, it could take up to 18 months to repair and heal. It is a very long time. I had an issue with my Achilles 15 years ago and tried almost every thing available at that time : massages, ultra sound, herbal treatment. I'm not really sure what worked but it took for ever (almost 2 years) to get better and the specialist was talking about surgery at some point. I just couldn't stay home for 2 months post-op so I waited and at some point it went away.
We have to be patient but it's extremely painful! I will look into the dry needling, I also did read something about acupuncture. I'm going to try to take turmeric for the inflammation, I just hope it will be gentle on my stomach..

Happy 13th indeed! I am so glad that at least you know what is wrong and hopefully the treatment they are prescribing will bring you relief. I know that being in pain is no fun. And also being told not to walk too much (and other limitations) is sucky too. But put your health first and let your body heal. Fingers crossed you get relief and get to feeling better!
