Let's start with Friday a little over two weeks ago. I took my daughter to Birmingham to see a specialist with the plan of having her admitted into the hospital the following Monday to start refeeding via a picc line. She was to stay in the hospital for roughly two weeks to get everything started and to make sure she was handling it well then be sent home to continue feeds that way for the next year or longer. We would be required to make trips to Birmingham (4 hours from our home) once or twice a week for in office appointments. I was prepared for all of this. Then I sat and listened to that doctor talk for four straight hours and realized there was no way in hell I could do it. By the time we got out of there I was ready to stomp on that man's head to make him shut up. I knew we had to do something, but this guy was not our answer.
Fast forward 13 days to last Thursday. I took Meg to her primary doctor. Holy shit, I lost my shit when she stepped on the scale. She lost another 8 pounds, EIGHT POUNDS, in thirteen days. She was now officially underweight. I already knew it was really bad that morning when trying to get her to the car she couldn't walk with her walker. Her legs and feet buckled underneath her every time she tried to take a step. Meg's primary has no clue how to help with all of Meg's neurological issues or any idea about VSG surgery even after we've explained it to her. Bless her heart. She still very much tries to help with what she can. She didn't want to panic just yet and hospitalized her. She really wants to see her learn to eat again. So she prescribed a drug to stimulate her appetite and she also gave us 3 bottles of Ensure Enlive to try. Finally the Ensure is something that Meg has said isn't terrible after all of the shakes, drinks, and powders we've tried. I've got her goal set at three a day (they are 350 calories each with 20 grams of protein) but she's usually just managing two.
That brings us to today. My daughter got up this afternoon and came zooming into the kitchen with her walker. Her eyes were brighter. Her legs were steadier than I've seen. I even got her on video walking all by herself without her walker!!! It is incredible the difference from Thursday to today. I'm blown away, and couldn't possibly be happier.
If you'd like to see my girl in action, check out the video on my Facebook page at Katrina Buck Grace. I'm so damn proud!!!
