Upper Endoscopy?? anyone had one?

Has anyone had to have a upper endoscopy?? i have to have one tuesday (the 5th) before my surgery on the 19th! has anyone had any problems with these?? why do dr's do them?? i was told i had to have one before surgery.. thats it. I am curious as to why? What purpose does it have? Shoudl i be nervous?? Is it painful? Are you put to sleep?? Im so nervous/excited! Thanks!!

Hey. Yes, the Endo is normal. The surgeon wants to make sure there aren't structural abnormalities in your stomach such as ulcers, tumors / masses. They also use the Endo to diagnose any hernias that may be present (like a hiatal hernia), and to check the health of your gallbladder. If either is present, they are typically repaired during the gastric sleeve surgery. Lastly, they remove a small tissue sample to check for H. Pylori (a common intestinal bacteria) because you would need to be treated for it with two different antibiotics prior to surgery. Hope that helps. Hello I'm in the UK so it might me slightly different for my endoscopy I was awake but sedated its not the most pleasant thing in the world but not painful and only lasts 7 mins I focused on that throughout its done just to check there will be no unexpected complications like stomach ulcers on the day of surgery, you will be fine hope this helps all the very best xx

I had to have one too. it was quick and painless. I was given anesthesia, was sound asleep. woke up less then thirty minutes later. didn't feel a thing or remember a thing. all my worrying was for nothing. you'll be fine.

Hi ~ I had one and it was not bad at all, I think my being nervous was by far the worst

I had one last summer for an unrelated thing so the surgeon just obtained the info from that doctor on what was found. It's a very simple procedure. They knock you out and stick a tube down your throat with a camera attached, all looking for the stuff previously mentioned. It takes minutes. I woke up maybe a half hour later with no sore throat or any sign of anything and went home. I do have a hiatal hernia (which gives me the hiccups constantly) but that will be fixed when they perform the sleeve surgery.

Thank You all SO much!! I didnt get any info on it from my surgical team..which is odd! I will ask a million questons on Tuesday Im sure! Im going to try to be calm and not nervous.. everything is SO close now!! Im just excited/scared...oh and hungry!! <3

I wish my Dr. would have done one. When he did my surgery he found I had a HUGE hiatal hernia which he repaired but now at 11 months out they determine I still have a small one. Also one week after my surgery my gall bladder was only functioning at 11% so it had to be removed so 9 scars instead of 5. Dr. said he was sorry for not checking it before could have saved me the extra surgery....duh...
