The only thing you need to worry about is if you read about someone who went to Mexico to have weight loss surgery and ended up dead!! When it's your time it's your time you could be ANYWHERE!! I'm headed for Tijuana on the 30th and i'm the least bit worried. It would be all over the news if a tourist who came to Mexico for surgery got jacked!!

Same as everyone else - I never once felt unsafe other than when I ventured out walking at night on my own away from the hotel (long story). TJ is 15 minutes on the other side of the border. You are not deep in the heart of MX or anything - people go there from San Diego to shop for a few hours and come home.

Also Medical Tourism is BIG business for MX economy... As angela said, negative press would really hurt them. They seriously cater to Americans there for this! The stories I have read in the thread above and elsewhere are families driving back to visit relatives, etc. I.e. not people only going to spend money. Just like Cancun, etc - those are tourist draws that are carefully protected as they are vital to MX economy. So if I was thinking about vacationing in MX and not going to a big resort, personally I would just add on the medical/dental stuff to the trip and would immediately feel safer already

And if it really bothers you, there are a few other countries that have big medical tourism meccas... India, Turkey, Brazil I think... Not sure how the cost relates - may be cheaper in the end to stay in the US - but you could look into it still....

Oh - and I just happened to find this.. no clue what date it is from, but its Dr Kelly talking about medical tourism in MX... pretty cool

I ventured outside of the hotel in Tijuana (walked around the neighborhood) and saw police sitting in their cars on every other corner. They have a real presence there to protect their tourism. I felt totally safe.

If you have any concerns you can always stay in the hospital or hotel. It's only a few days.

I had my surgery on Dec 11, 2011 in Tijuana and I never felt afraid. I even went out the day I arrived and walked about 5 blocks to a local market where they were selling everything and I bargained for a few things and then walked back to the hotel. The next morning I was picked up by the driver and taken to the hospital. I had my surgery on Monday and was released Wednesday and taken back to the hotel by the driver. I was in the hotel until Friday morning when the drive picked me up and took me back to the San Diego Airport. Other than that I did go out to the big mall on Thursday and felt very safe there also. I guess that if you are going into areas that you do not know you could find some trouble but I was there for surgery and not sightseeing. I would go again in a heartbeat.
