Default What is the recovery time?

What is the average recovery time from the gastric sleeve surgery and is the recovery time painful? I know there is not a lot of cutting involved but it took me nearly 3 painful months to get over my c-section so I am a little worried.

That is a great question. I have not seen that information anywhere that I have looked online yet. I know for the lap band surgery it took me about 5 weeks before I really felt great. I wasn't myself yet still.

I had mine on the 7th of this month. I only have 6 small incisions. It is nothing like my 2 c-sections.

More soreishness most of the time. Although I have turned my trunk a few times and yikes! it lets me know if I'm doing too much! LOL

I'm back to work a week after.

Good to know Minches! I was kind of wondering about recovery time myself. Back to work after a week that isn't too bad at all.

Glad to meet you Minches and congratulations on having your surgery. Great to find someone who has had the surgery and knows the answer to some of our questions.

Thank-you Minches. Glad to know it's not as bad as a c-section recovery that had me worried. Back to work a week after surgery is great and I would expect some soreness of course.

Truely other than expected soreness and being careful if you bend over or twit your trunk it really was an easy surgery.

My surgery is booked one week before I am to give a keynote talk. So, understandably, I was in a bit of a conflict. I did not want to defer my op again but I could not get out of the talk. So I contacted the people who went ahead and had the surgery at the time I was sent home in March and asked them how they had been early days post op.

One told me that he was released from hospital on the Friday (having had the op Monday) and was in the gym on the next Monday. So far so good.

The second told me I would have no problem at all but would probably be fagged out by 6pm and should plan to give the talk and quit before the energy level dropped. Apparently, for him, it was not the op but more the fatigue he felt from lack of food in those early days. He said it was just an adjustment period but I should take that into consideration.

The third, a lady, said she felt fine but did need two weeks off work as she felt very tired.

So I thought I would buy myself some nice make up to cover any dark eyes and go ahead and have the surgery anyway... If I have to take a nap on the train on the way home, it's a small price to pay!

    Gal xx

I think it can really depend on the skill of your surgeon, i have see patients say no pain to others struggling.

me personally the incision they took the stomach out troubled me the most.. compared to a c -section, the sleeve was easier, but i still slept in a recliner for almost 2 weeks because getting from lying to sitting position was pain full... but i had alot of brusing around my large incision that was still there at 1 month later..

but i was still able to get about, i was walking as much as i could from the time i woke up out of surgery.

I had my surgery on August 13th. I was home on the 14th evening with my belly with 5 tiny lap incisions and one larger incision where stomach was removed (about 1 1/2"). I was feeling great about 5 days post op. Being in Houston, TX getting out and walking in100 degree weather was prohibitive so I walked in the house and then added going up and down the staircase the start of the 2nd week. In all I took a total of 17 days off work. I am feeling fantastic. I'm down about 25lbs now, no more BP meds, no sleep apnea/snoring, no pain in my knees, off depression meds. Honestly it's wonderful. I get the occassional pulling sensation in my incisions but it's not something that plagues me. I am still on the narcotic pain meds at nighttime to sleep as I find that by the end of the day that is when I feel sore. I did purchase a surgical binder to wear and find that when I do use it, it's like a big "hug".
As for the diet, well my surgeon is very progressive from 3 hours after surgery, wanting you up and walking. He advanced my diet to all and any with the caution to watch microwaved foods esp. chicken since it gets too tough and of course, anything with seeds. I have not found anything that I don't tolerate, but eggs scrambled need to be much softer, poached seems to work better. I eat slowly and only about 3-5 oz at a meal depending on what's on the menu. I am walking about 2 miles every other day and likely about a mile on the in-between days. For the most part my energy is fantastic but every now and then I find I need a good R&R day. I also had a hiatel hernia repair done in conjunction with my sleeve and have not had one stitch of acid reflux or heartburn.

The best decision of my life for sure!

Hello, I noticed that you had the surgery in Houston and also had hiatel hernia repaired at the same time. I am scheduled for 9/24 for galdbladder removal and hiatel hernia repair at the same time as the sleeve in Houston. I just wonder if it's the same dr.

I have had a c section and the recovery for that for me was also 3 months. but after sleeve surg i was up and about the same afternoon, after the wind pain from surgury was under control i was fine in only a few hours. i felt great the next day, i think its a little about the surgeon and a lot about your attitude.

I was up and about on day 3. Plastic surgery is actually more painful than obesity surgery. Lorna

My doctor told me I had to be out of a clerical job for 6 weeks after my sleeve and hieatel (sp) surgery. I am not 6 days out and feeling pretty good!!!
