My surgeon requires a strict liquid diet for 2 weeks prior to surgery. I understand a prep is needed, but two weeks?? Just wondered if that was a requirement for you or if you did something different?? Thanks for the info!!
I had to do a liquid diet for 2 weeks also. The length of the diet depends on your BMI. I know someone who had to do it for 4 weeks, so I was very happy to only do 2 weeks. My sleeve was this weekend and went very smoothly without any complications. I know that sticking to the liquids really helped during the procedure AND with my recovery. The diet is ALL mental!! I knew that if I did not stick to the diet, my surgeon could cancel my procedure. It came down to, "Do I want that burger or do I want the sleeve"? It was an easy choice!!! You can do this! My BMI was 38 and I was on a liquid diet for 72 pre op. I have heard of others who have had to do it for 6 weeks.

Hi, I just had to do high protein, low carb, for six weeks prior to surgery, and then do clear liquids the day before the surgery. No long-term liquid or Optifast diet. I was 117 lbs. overweight when I started, and I lost 12 pounds in the six weeks before my surgery. I'm sure it is different with different surgeons and different patients.
Most doctors will require some kind of weight loss plan before bariatric surgery because, as others pointed out, it shrinks the liver to make the operation easier. DH met someone who did not follow the doctor's orders here, and they have a 6th incision because the doctor had to insert an extra tool to hold the liver out of the way during surgery. That's one more area that has to heal.
It'll be worth it in the long run!
I, too, have to do 2 weeks of liquid diet and I start Monday the 10th. I am nervous about it, but as one earlier poster stated...It will be worth it, plus I get a head start on weight loss. I hope we all have the courage to stick it out...after we are sleeved, it will probably be much easier????

I didn't have to go through any pre-op diet, only fasted 12 hours before surgery so my stomach was empty.
My doctor in particular told me that he doesn't put his patients on a liquid diet before surgery because it causes more than the necessary stress.
But he will put some of his patients if he found that they have a greasy liver or something like that or if the patient has a very very high BMI.
I think every doctor depending on where and how they were trained will have different opinions about pre-surgery diet, also they make the decision to put you or not on liquid diet depending on your personal situation.
My advice is follow what your doctor says and try not to go by other persons experience because every person is different and your doctor knows what's best for you according to his experience.
