Default Will be getting wls in June-Have a question

    Hi everyone,

I will be getting my sleeve in June, however I wanted to know since it's about 6 months til my surgery did any of you try and get a bit toned before surgery to avoid excess skin or at least slim down before the surgery? I know if we were able to lose the weight without the surgery we would do that instead . I'm just concerned about the excess skin.

    Thanks

I was in a precarious situation because I could not get under a certain weight if I wanted my insurance to pay for it. But I did work out. Once approved, I was able to do the pre op and lose weight. Since having the sleeve I have been running and doing toning exercise. So far it is not too bad and I am 43. My sister who was in her 30's when she did her surgery and lost over a 100 lbs on her 5' frame just had a little bit of loose skin. Nothing too bad and definitely not enough to need surgery. The first 80 lbs she lost in like 4 or 5 months. But she also worked out.

Thanks for the reply. What kind of exercises do you recommend for toning? I currently am just walking but want to start toning as well.

I would recommend starting a walking program. Start slow and work your way up speed and distance wise. I think I did so well losing weight because I was a walker before I had the surgery.

Squats, crunches, modified push ups, lunges (those kill my thighs), leg lifts, and weights. I also run 3x a week. If you do only cardio you'll get more jiggly but adding toning/weights helps.

I also did a lot of walking pre-op. I was not worried about losing too much weight since my BMI was so high (52/53) and the insurance required 40.
I mainly wanted to gain some muscle and it did work. I also lost a little weight doing that.
Skin for me is an issue but I'm over 40. It was bad around month 6/7 and did get better later on, the skin did bounce back a little. I do take omegas and also use body lotion but it's mainly in our genes. Also stay hydrated is really important, I can see on my face when I don't drink enough.
I will have surgery at some point but the main reason is to have my abdominal muscle wall repaired. I'm not sure about my bat wings...so far it's not really an issue (and fold-able ;-)
