I have not really been on any type of diet. The nutritionist at the surgeon's office told me to eat a minimum of 80 grams of protein plus 64 ounces of water each day, but that's it. I was not required to count calories, fat, carbs, or anything else.
I am still not on a diet. I occasionally eat pizza, cheeseburgers, burritos, tacos, cheesecake, and so-called junky 'forbidden foods.' However, I run 5+ miles a day, so I have plenty of bounce room to ensure no foods are forbidden.
My eating plan might be controversial, but it has been working for me.
