Default Gastic sleeve and CPAP machines

I don't know if any of you have experienced this. I just began using a CPAP 3 weeks prior to surgery. Everything was going along just fine. Then I had my surgery and have found my digestive system filling up with air while using my CPAP. I wake up uncomfortably bloated, sometimes in pain and tooting along. That excessively bloating can't be too great on a healing tummy, can it? Let me know if this has happened to you. I have discontinued the use of the CPAP for 2 weeks. Hopefully that'll work.

Yes I did experience that. I believe it comes from your body not being used to the changes, and when you don't eat my stomach full up with air.

I use a cpap to sleep in, but have been using for awhile now, this typically tends to happen when you don't close the back of your throat, it shouldn't have anything to do with the surgery. the air should be passing through your nasal passage to the lungs, when the back of your throat is open then the air bypasses the lunch and goes into the stomach. and bloat. they have chin straps on cpap.com that will help keep your mouth closed.

Gina 925, I would recommend you call your pulmonary doc or whoever prescribed the CPAP. I have used a CPAP for over 20 years. In my support group before the surgery one of the participants said "oh remember to get your sleep doctor's office to lower your pressure to 10 if it is set above 10 before your surgery" This participant said he was told before his surgery that he should not have his CPAP above a setting of 10 based on his surgeons instruction for post op. So before surgery I called my pulmonary doc and his office Respiratory tech reduced my pressure setting from 13 to 10. I have used it like that since surgery (last 2.5 months) and sleep fine. I do keep in contact with my pulmonary doc office and due to my weight loss and the recording they read off my card in the CPAP he thinks I am doing fine at 10 and he wants to do sleep study in 3 months to assess any further pressure changes.

I have thought about this too. I have been using a c-pap machine for over 6 years and wondered if there would be any issues after surgery. I am at an 11 setting for pressure and will definitely check with my sleep center docs. I have this question on my list when I meet with the surgeon next week.

    Height: 5'8"
    Highest Weight: 270 BMI 40.3
Day of Surgery Weight: 223 / Pre-Op nutrition diet: LOST 47 pounds
1 Month Weight: 202 (-21 lbs.) TOTAL LOST: 64 pounds
2 Month: Weight: 188 (-14 lbs.) TOTAL LOST: 78 pounds
    6 Month Weight: 169 (-2) BMI: 25.7 TOTAL LOST: 97 pounds

I use a nasal pillow instead of a mask. I guess my mouth hangs open when I sleep and I swallow lots of air. I know there are chin straps out there, but I prefer to wait to heal instead of strapping my face shut. Lowering my pressure settings probably won't help because I am only at a 5 now.

    Hi,
5 is just about the lowest you can go on Cpap, most Doctors don't even consider that therapeutic A 15 pound weight loss will probably let you shed that machine.Good luck moving forward to good health. When you've lost a decent amount of weight get another sleep study.Push for an in house the portable ones are really unrealible. Machine free...Yah!

You will probably have to use a chin strap. I do since surgery. Just 1 of those things. Try sleeping in a semi upright positing also

I love the nasal pillows. Got a "dreamwear" mask and it feels like i am not wearing anything. Love it!
