Hi all! I just got cleared to start soft foods. Any ideas or recipes would be greatly appreciated. I was told to try shrimp and I did and that ended quickly. I became very sick and I couldn't handle it. Please help.
If you just had your GSS, I think you should focus on fiber after the surgery.
As far as I know, constipation is a common complication after surgery. So it is important to include fiber in your diet as you are recovering from surgery.
Those are like:
- Whole grain breads - Look for breads that use whole grains and are darker in color. White bread is typically too refined to be a good source of fiber.
- Cereal - Not all cereal has a high-fiber content. Check the label to avoid sugary or low-fiber cereal. Look for cereal with fiber in the name, or stick with old-fashioned breakfast foods, such as oatmeal or cream of wheat.
- Fruits - Fresh fruit is an excellent source of vitamins and fiber.
- Vegetables - Vegetables are an excellent source of fiber and can be purchased fresh or frozen.
I suggest "How about rice pudding?"
- 1 egg (beaten)
- 1 cup milk
- ½ tsp vanilla
- ½ cup well cooked rice
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 ½ tablespoons granulated sugar
**Add the egg, cornstarch and beaten sugar to a saucepan blend until smooth. Gradually add in the milk, stirring all the while and then add in rice. Mix this well. Cook this mixture over a medium heat, stirring constantly, till it comes to a boil. Remove from heat then and add the vanilla. Let it cool and then sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg on top before serving.

I really liked blending reduced fat cheese with beans and sometimes a little unflavored protein powder. I'd mix that with finely chopped cilantro, green chilies, and green onion and microwave it. Then I would top it with a tiny dab of lite sour cream and/or salsa and it seriously tasted like nachos. Soft on my stomach and yummy. My chipless nachos.
I also really liked hot & sour soup and egg drop soup for the tofu and egg protein and yummy veg, soft scrambled eggs, and sometimes I'd freeze Oikos greek yogurt blended with a little non fat Fairlife milk and vanilla protein powder until it was firm and had my own protein dense soft serve frozen yogurt. I'd still avoid pasta, bread, and rice at this stage; they will expand by quite a bit in your little stomach, leaving you uncomfortable and with no room for any meat and veg.
I discovered that the crockpot was my friend at soft foods stage because cooking some meat/veg in some protein broth made everything so incredibly tender and much easier to eat after it had cooked on low all day long.

Shrimp is really dense and unless it's mixed with veggies/broth you might have issues eating shrimp at the beginning. Chicken is very dense too and I had to have it mixed with veggies and broth. If the protein is too dry it will be hard to eat and digest
During soft food I was eating mainly soups (veggies mixed with meat). I loved split peas, anything with beans. Greek yogurt is good too. Tuna with a little mayo or even one poached egg. I just had to be careful with not too much fat or sugar because my stomach didn't like it. Meat with veggies was always the best option. My team is not advising to go low carbs so I was told to eat more carbs than I did but don't like to eat rice or pasta, usually can't have more than one or two bites. I'd rather have quinoa.
Eat slowly bites the size of a peanut.

Chicken salad made with canned cooked chicken. It's softer and you can make it into a paste almost. Good source of protein. I also liked to make a thick chicken soup with chicken and chicken broth - some soft cooked veggies too for fiber. Carrots, celery and then I would blend with a hand blender. Crock pot cooked chicken is a great thing to have on hand.
