    Default Get drunk

I am considering getting a sleeve and have a question that no one seems to talk about.

Can I still get drunk if I want to?

With out judgment I like to get drunk once in awhile during a social get together. All of my friends drink and we have fun doing so.

Second question is if you can what can you drink?

I have not tried to get drunk. I did go out once since surgery and nursed a drink. I drank half. Although I am only 9 weeks out and can only eat small amounts. I know that eventually I can drink and get drunk but it should be an occasional thing. My sister is 5 years post op and she drinks sometimes. Just remember that at a lighter weight and calorie intake you will get drunk quicker.

I've been sleeved 11 months ago and I'm still not drinking. I never got drunk in my life actually, I do like red wine but usually never have more than two glasses with a meal.

But I had one bite of a meal with a sauce "flambe" a few month ago and it made me really sick. I actually didn't know about the alcohol in the sauce because I would have not picked that meal if I had known.
I was told to wait until one year to drink again, I will have a sip or two in a few weeks...till then I do my best to stay far away from alcohol.
But a few people here were able to have red wine after their surgery without any issue.
For others half a glass and they are tipsy.

That said, to be approved for surgery I had two interviews with a psychiatrist. He did say that one of the problem of weight loss surgery is that sometimes when people can't eat any more, if for example they had a food addiction, they will replace it with alcohol.
So I'm not judging here but the fact that you worry about still being able to be drunk after a sleeve is actually a concern.

Why do you want to get a sleeve in the first place?
I'm guessing to lose weight and be healthier right?
You should consider that you will need to abstain from alcohol for one year because that's in most guidelines.
    Good luck and take care.

Of course you can still get drunk. Why would you think you couldn't? I can drink anything I want as long as it's not carbonated. That leaves beer, champagne, Mikes Hard Lemonade and drinks with soda mixers out, but whiskey, wine, rum, liqueurs, vodka, and Twisted Tea go down just fine.

And no, VSG did not make me a light weight. I tolerate alcohol the same as before surgery, which basically means I can out drink a football team. For me, getting drunk without consuming 2000+ calories is quite difficult, so guess what....I never get drunk. But that's a choice, not a physical impossibility.

I'm considering the surgery because of health problems such as high VP, fatty liver, high cholesterol. I'm a 40 year old male that is very active with friends. Since quitting smoking I have resorted to eating foods until I'm past full. These foods consist of faster foods and anything else that tastes good. I find myself plotting out my next meal an hour or two after I just ate. That is my reasoning for this tool. I'm heading down a dark path and the lights are already getting dimmer.
As for the alcohol I have no problem giving it up for a period of time but would like to be able to tie one on if I felt like it.
I'm curious what alcohols are preferred since beer is carbonated.

Great question! Everyone will be different after VSG or any WLS. Just be mindful that transfer of addictions is a real thing. What might have been social drinking could easily turn into binge drinking. Also, don't forget alcohol has so many empty calories. So, it can interfere with your weight loss depending on how frequent you drink. But no judgement here! I love a great party. Getting lit with friends on the weekend is cool...I am hoping to get my social life back after my revision as well.

    Wishing you the best!
