Default Pre op diet. I'm starving!!!

Help!! I just started my pre op diet Sunday and I'm STARVING!!! My surgery is scheduled for January 19. I don't know if I'm going to make it. Does anyone have any tips to get me through this??
The Dr told me I need to lose 30 lbs. does anyone know how much I actually need lose? I know the more the better. But I need a realistic number. I feel like 30 is totally outrageous.

    Woah!

When did your surgeon tell you to lose 30lbs?

The pre-op diet is to reduce your fatty liver, and yes it helps you shed pounds. I can't know how your body will respond to the cleansing diet, but feel assure that if you follow as your surgeon prescribed it you will lose pre-op. It will work because it's short term.

I did not have a set number of lbs to lose. I was told to have a shake for breakfast and dinner and lunch was lean meat and veggies. The 3 days immediately before surgery I was to have only liquids. Shakes and broth and water. No solids whatsoever. I was only on the pre op for 9 days. I lost about 10 lbs during that time. But I am on the smaller size weight wise since I am only 4'11". Generally the higher your weight, the more you will lose. If you are really hungry you can try having some broth. It is filling. Also, are you only on liquids?? I know the liver shrinking diet is crucial. Your surgeon needs to be able to get to your stomach. If they can't move the liver out of the way it can make the surgery harder to do or even impossible. If you are really worried, talk to your surgeon. They are the best for this information as every surgeon is different and has different rules.

Because I lost weight on my own before starting the pre-op diet (about 11 pounds) I only lost 7 pounds during my two weeks protein pre-op diet.
I had one shake for breakfast, one for lunch and a dinner with a lean protein (chicken, fish or eggs) and veggies.
The three first days were hard because I stopped all carbs and coffee and had headaches nausea etc...but after that it was fine. I was drinking a lot, mainly herbal tea, it did help.
The day before the surgery my surgeon was so happy I lost more than he wanted that he let me have the dinner of my choice! (I had chicken) I was never on full liquid for days before the surgery, just fasting from midnight until the surgery the next morning.

30 pounds to lose sounds a lot, but it will depend on how much you weight and what you did eat before the diet. For people who eat like 5000 calories per day that might be possible I guess, but it still does seem a bit unrealistic.

May be you should contact your surgeon to get more details about his expectations. My surgeon was never really focused on a number he said that the most important was to be really strict with the diet to help with the liver situation (I had a really big fatty liver like most obese people, but there's also a liver problem in my family, even when "slim" we still have a fatty liver) so I never cheated! It was hard because temptation was everywhere, but I still made it, I was too scared about the consequences if I was not following my guidelines...
    Good luck and take care!

I just started my pre-op diet as well. When I feel hungry I drink water. It seems to help.

As am I!!! This morning I am feeling the hunger. Sitting at my desk...drinking lots of lemon/cucumber water. Breakfast was a EAS protein shake. But it's all for a good cause.

I have started my diet as well and I don't feel hungry but I do have a headache and feel weak. Hang in there I did add some natural almonds to my plan 10 per day.

I agree that sipping on water all day helps me a lot. When you cant stand it, I drink Bone Broth, its got a lot of protein in 1 cup and that satisfies my cravings. Hang in there!!!

During my pre-op liver reduction diet, the first couple days I added an extra protein shake to get me through and drank A LOT of water. By day 3-4 my hunger curbed. Perhaps that might help you.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone. I am 300 lbs. so my Dr said the goal is to lose 10%. I get that she wants the liver to shrink but geez. If I coukd lose 30 lbs in 3 weeks I probably wouldn't be having the surgery. Lol!!
I can have 3-4 protein shakes a day, up to 2 cups of non starchy veggies and sugar free popcicles and sugar free jello. Today I broke down and put chicken in my salad. I still have 2 weeks to go on this pre op diet so I'm hoping my hunger will subside and I'll be able to only have the shakes and be somewhat satisfied.
Good luck to all those who are on their pre op diets as well.
