Unhappy New here and I'm struggling..

    Hi I'm Jullie, I'm 21.
I have been considered as overweight and I'm thinking about a gastric sleeve surgery.
I told this idea to my parents and they rejected it. They thought it was too risky for me, they said that I could lose my weight in a natural way without any surgery, that I should try more.
    I need some advice here..
Should I keep on doing exercises or saving money for the surgery? How is it like after the surgery??? What should I prepare?

Usually to be accepted for a sleeve you need to have a BMI higher than 40, or have two comorbitidies if you are under. To be covered by an insurance you will need to show that you did try several diets, go through a psych eval and then take nutrition classes for up to six months.
Exercise is good for you what ever you decide anyway.
A sleeve is not a quick fix for being overweight, you need to do your part also and it's not always easy. My first month post-op was not a walk in the park.
I was morbidly obese for 20 years, tried everything under the sun and even did a one year diet (was starving the whole time), lost weight and did regain again. After trying everything I did have the surgery because my health was really in jeopardy and it seemed to me it was the only solution left.
It is surgery after all, so there is risks.
You need to do your research about the process, understand that it's not reversible, when it's done it's done.
There's many good books and also youtube videos (Dr Weiner or Dr A).
    Good luck!

I was wondering your BMI/weight as well. You say overweight so I'm curious. I think most people who've had the surgery done are obese or morbidly obese. Most are in the 40+BMI range. As stated above, if you plan to use insurance educate yourself on your insurance companies requirements. Most people who pay out of pocket go to Mexico as in the US the surgery is around 12-15K. There is work involved. It's a tool and a new lifestyle. I'm 8 weeks out and can barely eat. It changes social situations for you because you can't eat like other people. It works if you embrace it, the lifestyle change, and the mental part of it. There are bad habits you'll have to give up. The sleeve absolutely helps you do that but if you start to cheat the sleeve you can stop losing and regain. But if you stick to the lifestyle you can be successful. Recovery is different for everyone but most classify it as bearable.

    Hi, Julie. Welcome.

If you truly have an "eating disorder" (have you been officially diagnosed with "binge eating disorder" or some other actual disorder?) then merely having WLS will not fix your problems long-term. Anyone who's determined to eat, even after WLS, can figure out a way to overeat -- by eating the wrong foods, by eating constantly between meals, etc. And they can and will regain the weight they've lost.

My point is that if you have a real eating disorder, then you must seek therapy to overcome those issues.

Then there's "disordered eating" -- comfort-eating, eating out of boredom, eating out of plain old ignorance about which foods are nutritious and which ones easily add weight, etc. Most of us had those issues. And most of us who've been successful in losing our excess weight and keeping it off have definitely gone to school (so to speak) and worked very hard to change our lifestyles.

Being overweight / obese is not a problem that is repaired solely by having weight loss surgery. As you go into this subject more, you will learn more about the other tools that successful WLS patients build and use to be successful, e.g., regular exercise, psychological support, nutritional education, family support (and sometimes education of family members), meal planning, food tracking (for some, not all), etc. There are specific eating behaviors (eating slower, not drinking with meals, eating dense protein first, etc.) that help a lot. There are foods to avoid, foods to minimize, trigger foods (that can vary person to person).

My advice to you is to keep reading here to get a better sense of what WLS entails. You should also find an introductory lecture (led by a bariatric surgeon) in your area and attend that, either with or without your parents. They usually last 2-3 hours and are free. You would learn a lot about WLS and whether it's something you would benefit from.

    Very best to you!

My insurance required a psych evaluation. Because as Ann2 stated this surgery will not change any psychological issues you have with food. It is only but a tool. You have to change your attitudes towards food. Everyone has slider foods that you can get plenty of in and easily gain the weight back. They vary from person to person but generally are very unhealthy foods such as shakes, ice creams, fried foods, sweets etc. You need to soul search if you are ready to put the work in to succeed. Every day is about making good choices and eliminating bad habits. I hope you are able to get the help you need and succeed with your weight loss no matter which route you go.

I'm just wondering: is your problem recent or did you already have issues during your childhood?
My daughter who's 20 years old was fine until she left home for college, and eating cafeteria food made her gain lot's of weight. Since she is in her own place now and cook her own food it's getting better, she is loosing weight. She was not obese when she was younger.

Becoming obese will make you eat more because your body want's enough food to maintain your weight.
But if you think that you have an eating disorder, surgery might not be the solution right now. A good surgeon and his team would not agree on doing a surgery on a patient with an eating disorder, that's why during the process we have to meet with a shrink.
Surgery can be an option later but only if the issue is treated first.

Weight problems are difficult at every age, but you need to take it one day at a time and try to set small goals for yourself. Meeting with a nutritionist and a therapist would be the first thing to do. And If you can't follow your program one day, don't stress out and just start again the next day. Try a to get some help first, it is important. If you get support it will be easier. Plus stress is bad for weight loss.
    Take care.

An eating disorder would disqualify you from bariatric surgery of any sort with a reputable surgeon.

Surgery won't fix an eating disorder, because it's a psychological disorder, not a physical one. You need to fix that first before considering something as drastic as having most of an internal organ removed surgically.

Fixing the eating disorder might fix your weight gain and definitely would make surgery more likely to be successful, if it comes to that.

Anyone remember a young high school girl who was on this site forever, finally had surgery, and then disappeared. Wish I could remember her name.
