    Default Ketosis?

    Hi,

I am about 12 days post op and losing about a pound a day on clear liquids. I tested my urine and found I was in a strong state of ketosis-no surprise but wanted to confirm. I see the surgeon tomorrow for 2 week post op. After that I am supposed to progress to full liquids.
While looking forward to cream soups/yogurt, I am concerned about the carbs and coming out of ketosis- that it will slow weight loss----any thoughts, suggestions from your experience?

    Sue

I never bothered with aiming for ketosis. I probably never was. It really isn't necessary for healthy, long term, permanent weight loss. I was using milk to make protein shakes, drinking pureed soups and drinkable yogurt from the 3rd day. Started adding pureed fruit to my protein shakes after the first week postop. Once on regular foods, my goal was not only to get 60-80g protein and 100 ounces of water, but also to eat a little bit from all food groups. This eating plan basically became a template for maintenance. I've done the ketosis/Atkins thing in the past and lost plenty of weight, but always regained once I stopped. I didn't want my VSG to be just another failed diet, so I made sure my postop choices were ones I could live with forever, not just a temporary diet.

BTW, lost over 100% of my excess weight and still maintaining 3 years out.

12 days post-op? Get ready for the downhill slide of your life. Your next 4-5 months will have you staring at the scale in amazement as the weight pours off of you. No ketosis? Not a worry. You're going to lose, and lose big.
