    Default No special Pre-Op diet?

I visited my doc on Thursday of last week and during that meeting I asked about a pre-op diet and he told me to just continue as I had been. No carbs, high quality protein, no sodas, lots of water. He did suggest a stool softener.

I am curious if anyone else didn't have to do a pre-op?

The doc I am seeing has been doing this surgery for over 10 years... he comes highly recommended.
I just wonder as so many post I have read here regarding pre-op diets.

Thanks for looking and commenting if you can.

No pre-op diet for me, just had to fast 12 hours prior to check in. I was hovering right at the cut off point for my weight. My Dr. told me NOT to lose any weight prior to surgery. This might be your case as well. Good luck to you!

I was under the 40 BMI (which my insurance requires I am 40+) when I went in for surgery. (I was at 40 when I got my approval.) My pre op was 10 days. A week was shakes at breakfast and dinner and for lunch it was lean meat and veggies. Then for 3 days prior it was full liquids. Protein shakes and broth. My surgeon said it's better for the stomach to be completely void of solid foods to prevent risk of infection. But I have seen on here that the pre op varies greatly. Some have no pre op and I think a full 2 week liquid diet was the most restrictive. I've also seen where people must lose weight before surgery will be considered even though they're not any heavier than other people who've had the surgery. So it's really up to surgeon preference I think.

I have to do a liver reduction diet for two weeks prior to surgery. I'm not entirely sure what that entails but I'll find out tomorrow and start it in 4 days.

It's all about the BMI and the state of the liver. My BMI was over 50 and I had a really fatty liver. Some doc could recommend up to 4 weeks of pre-op diet in cases like mine . But because I did lose weight during the three months before surgery with my own diet, I only had to do two weeks. Two protein shakes, one dinner with protein and veggies, no carbs, lots of water/herbal tea was my daily intake for those two weeks.

A friend of mine who had a BMI under 40 and was doing the surgery to help with her diabetes didn't have to do the pre-op diet.

Thank you. I guess I feel better about not having to do a pre op diet. I was a little worried, because most all the documentation I have read recommends one. I think I will probably abstain from solids 2 or 3 days prior. Thanks for your input.

I think that would be a good idea. If anything, it can't hurt and will jump start your weight loss. Good luck!

Different for everyone, seems to range between none (Like you) and 2 weeks of liquids. I had 5 days of protein drinks, broth, sugar free popsicles, etc. The purpose is to shrink your liver to make the surgery safer.
