    Default Caffeine??

Hello everyone, I was sitting here at work and getting drowsy in front of the computer! I was wondering, once I have my sleeve surgery can I have caffeine? Coffee, or other drink mixes with caffeine? Thank you guys for all of your'e advice and information!

I stayed away from caffeine for a year. It is really hard on your stomach--so be careful

Terribj, I was thinking it may not be good for your stomach. What if any other ways are there to help the drowsiness during the day other than more sleep?

I had my last cup of coffee the night before the surgery. I resumed my coffee habit approximately 2 months after the surgery. In fact, I am sipping my second cup of coffee for the morning as I type this response.

I drink between 2 and 4 cups of coffee per day. Some people claim coffee stimulates their appetites and stomach acid production. For me, coffee actually cuts my appetite so I end up not overeating. Your mileage may vary.

Cardio exercise (running, bicycling, brisk walking, jump-roping) makes a notable difference in my energy levels.

    Good luck to you!

RehabNurse, Thank you for the info! I can handle a short period or longer if I have to. But it gets kinda rough some days staring at the computer if I don't have any caffeine!

At about 6 or 7 months after surgery I started drinking coffee everyday. It was nice to wake up in the morning before everyone and have a quiet cup of coffee on the back porch. Nowadays I have 2-3 cups of coffee, usually with a splash of sugar free Torani syrup and some non fat Fairlife milk. Like RehabNurse, it curbs my appetite and I don't have any issues with it. Other stomachs may vary!

I had coffee just a few days after surgery. Drink at least two cups every day, never a problem.

Yes, once your tummy has healed after about 6 wks, you can try it. You may or nay not tolerate it, but you can keep testing every so often. You just have to be diligent about what you add to it and make sure you include it in your daily calories

I have been reading up on this as well because my doc said no caffeine for 3 months after surgery. From my researching I've found that not only is it because it is hard on a lot of people's stomach, but it's also because caffeine is a diuretic and your body has been used to getting hydration from food as well, and with the postop diet it is already important to get all your liquids in to stay hydrated so you don't want to do something that will possibly dehydrate you. I'm really worried about this too, I think a lot of us who work boring desk jobs where we are literally staring at a computer for 8 hours are wondering how we will make it without the caffeine! I'm 4 wks preop, I'm cutting down to 1 medium coffee a day this week, then small cup next week, then the week after that hopefully just decaf. I'm hoping cutting down slow like that & using decaf tea or coffee will "fool" my brain into thinking I'm still having my warm drink in the morning. I'm also planning on getting up every hour and walking around the office floor because that will be good for postop anyway and hopefully aid in not being caught catching Zzzzs at my desk!

Good info! I will try to cut it out as much as possible! It will be tough though. I plan on adding more sleep as well. I like the getting up every so often too! Good luck to you!
