Greetings from CT. I've been lurking here in the forum for a few months now and finally feel it's time to make an introduction and tell a little bit about my story.....
I'm 45 years old (young), live in Connecticut, have 2 kids, married, perfect life. Oh yeah, can't forget the dog!
For the last 20 years of my life I've been heavy, and struggled with my weight. When I was young, I played football, baseball, etc, and being big was good, even encouraged. Fast forward to 3 years ago, and I was as heavy as I ever have been, 310lbs approx. I went to the Dr. for a normal physical and SURPRISE,,,,, I have Type 2 diabetes.
I worked really hard for a year, lost 50lbs, but, the roller coaster weight loss program began and now I'm back up to 295...... I did a lot of research on diabetes, and found out that WLS is really the only cure! So that is why I am where I am today.... If it wasn't for diabetes, I would not even be thinking about this! I have always been comfortable in my body, and wouldn't change it otherwise. The crazy thing is I am really doing this for my kids (6 and 9). I've come to the realization that I am / have been truly digging my own grave with a spoon and fork. I know I need to make a massive life style change if I want to see my kids go to college and have their own families.
I have finished all the pre - surgery appointments, completed all the insurance required activities (I think....) and am now just waiting to hear from my Dr. if it is approved.....
I'm excited, and a little nervous... I'm not at all nervous about surgery, but more concerned about sticking to the diet and not wasting this incredible opportunity. I am anticipating a surgery date in early December, and will be taking 4 - 6 weeks off of work to recover and get on the diet/program for long term success.
Nice to meet everyone.
Glenn
