    Default I almost decided which

Hello everyone, after several ups and downs concerning WLS I attended a support group today to get back on track with my health issues. Yes, I came to the meeting with my mind made up to have the sleeve. After listening to the support group Dr. whom lead the meeting, I'm right back to where I was two years ago "CONFUSED". I understand that RNY is better for me due to my diabetes, but I was really hoping for the sleeve surgery. I have a BMI of 39 and afraid of losing too much with the RNY procedure. Dr. said NO, don't look at it like that. If you have diabetes which is a horrible disease that causes blindness, kidney disease, amputations etc..RNY is the way to go. So here I go again. Best wishes to everyone

    WELCOME!

    PLEASE do more research.

This is hands down the best decision I ever made for me and my health. My ONLY regret is that I didn't do it sooner. Aches and pains are gone. Most meds (including several daily insulin injections) are gone. I went on a waterslide with my grandkids this summer! I'm riding my Harley again! I wear a size 2 or sometimes a 0! I didn't think I would ever be able to do any of those things again. It's a whole new lease on life and I'm enjoying every moment!

Best of luck as you embark on your journey!

Hands down the best thing I ever did for myself and I'm not suffering with a disease. My cousin just had a stroke because he had diabetes and never really took care of it (couldn't lose weight) he will most likely go on dialysis in a year since he only has 15% kidney function because of the diabetes. I don't understand what is going through your head. You need to see the forest for the trees, you're not looking at this from the right perspective. You owe it to your future self and your family, once time goes by it will be too late. Diabetes and fat wear your body down. Bite the bullet and do it, you won't be sorry.

    I had VSG.

I observed 5 family members/friends go through RNY only to regain and then some. I'm watching my daughter-in-law struggling with significant regain 8+ years after RNY. She's considering converting to VSG. My sister-in-law had VSG, successfully lost and has maintained for 10+ years. VSG is not a magic bullet, it's a tool. My observation was that VSG was a more powerful tool.

I did a TON of research. I encourage you to do the same. The first Dr I spoke with recommended RNY. The Dr I chose asked ME what MY preference was and why.

I highly recommend watching Dr Matthew Weiner videos on YouTube. They're full of useful information. Ask Dr A is also on YouTube and may answer a lot of your questions.

Here's the deal with the RNY gastric bypass that surgeons do not tell prospective candidates: a phenomenon called intestinal adaptation will eventually occur several years after surgery.

Intestinal adaptation involves structural and functional changes in the intestine that enhance calorie absorption in the part of the intestine that has not been bypassed. These changes can result in rapid weight regain several years after the person has had RNY gastric bypass.

The adaptations that promote weight regain in RNY patients include bowel lengthening, thickening, and a notable increase in villus height and crypt depth. Functional changes include increased nutrient transporter expression, accelerated crypt cell differentiation, and slowed transit time.

In plain English, the intestine of the RNY patient becomes madly efficient at absorbing excess calories over time...this often spells easy regain of some or all of their weight. On the other hand, no intestinal bypass occurs during a sleeve gastrectomy.

As with most issues in life --- if you don't know the answer, more research is required. This is not a wisecrack. You will have to be Happy with your decision and life after the surgery. I would not proceed until you are so convinced that you can't wait to go forward.

    Warm Regards

    Hal

Yes, for me the sleeve is the better option. I am ready to have this done and hope that I will work it as best I can for the purpose of controlling/ridding the diabetes. Thanks to everyone!

Peaches, I had a VSG 25 days ago. My son-in-law had a RNY 6 years ago. I was extremely confused about which surgery to consider prior to having my procedure. Thankfully, my doctor was very helpful in making my decision. EITHER will help your diabetes, but the RNY should help more. The deciding factor for me was the ability to take meds for my arthritis and severe lower back pain. FOR ME ..... the RNY prohibited those types of meds. My son-in-law's weight has stabilized and he is doing fine. I would have gone for the RNY myself if I did not have other medical issues. If you are really confused, make another appointment and have a heart to heart talk with your doctor. This is a life changer. Make sure you are happy with it.
