Default Low Back Pain and Sciatica Issues

Moderate walking has been my go to exercise for the last two years after gallbladder surgery. Whenever I start an exercise routine, I have Sciatica spasms that scare me still.

When my sutures heal up, I am going to join a gym for lap swimming. Anyone with similar LBP and sciatica issues that has started an exercise routine that has not flared your back?

Hey Shirl, Boy do I feel your pain. In 1998 I was hit as a pedestrian by a drunk driver and to this day I still have severe pain. I have had 2 major back surgeries, 3 Bilatteral Open Joint TMJ surgeries and knee surgery along with so many injections and burning of the nerves over the years that I have completely lost count. I have tried tons of different exercise regiments over the years and almost all cause severe pain for days, weeks, moths. A few years ago I discovered Pilate's and it is the best thing in the entire world. The down side is it can be extremely expensive anywhere from $20.00 to $30.00 per session if they have the machines which I prefer for balance. Now multiply that by 3x a week x4 weeks it's kind of insane but honestly if you can afford it then go for it. There are gyms that have the classes without the machines so I would definitely look in your area for that. I also fount a Pilates bar at Walmart for about $20.00 and it comes with an exercise plan which is pretty easy. Pilates works on your body from the inside out and focuses on your muscles and stretching. There is "0" impact on your back or anything else for that matter so the only thing you may experience is sore muscles just from stretching them but that's it. You will build muscle and your body will have a nice form to it just make sure you do it at least 3X a week. Although Pilates is my favorite swimming is also the next best thing because there is zero impact on your joints. I hope this helps!

There is a Pilates studio 300 yards from if that! I went in once for a free session, but I came out a bit, a lot! shaky. And to be honest I remember thinking oh I'm going to regret this tomorrow, but I never did!!! I'm going to call to see if they have a student discount program lol!

    Thank you!

Shirl good luck on your journey. My forties were the best decade of my life. However once I hit 50 the pounds and the discomfort piled on.I work night shift because it worked for my family, however it has taken it's toll in orthopedic issues...Go Girl!!! Wish I had taken this step 10 years sooner. So much to look forward too.

I have had lower back pain and sciatica issues for as long as I can remember. As a matter of fact up until about a month ago I was seeing a Physical Therapist 3x per week for the pain. It wasn't helping so I stopped. Hoping that losing the weight will help with those issues. Walking is my go to exercise as well and usually I have to stop 3-4 times in an hour of this activity to stretch my back out so I can continue. Pilates sounds like a wonderful idea!! I may have to look into that!!
