    Default Potassium

    Hi,
Getting ready for my surgery next week. I am trying to find it if normal protocol is getting an IV of potassium post-surgery? I had it with my gallbladder surgery and was a hot mess. I don't want it and will do anything to avoid it.

    Thank you!

That is a new one to me too. Most of your protein shakes are high in potassium. I hope all is well.

    Good luck

I've had a history of low potassium all my life, and have been in hospital several times to bring it back up to 3.5 (minimum) or higher. For me, IV potassium is a given. Additionally, I've been taking potassium 2x per day since I've been home.
I haven't ever heard of it being standard protocol. Too much potassium is as dangerous as too little.
Since you're having your surgery in a week, perhaps you can be especially diligent in consuming additional potassium.
    Good Luck!
